Thanks Margaret. Yes, 10 years on, and still going strong, and happy to share an anniversary with International Women's Day. There are around 550 'signed up' members, and we know that some issues and debates get printed off and circulated around clinics and groups, so it is widely read.It started when a group of half a dozen or so felt the need to circulate and share information about health visiting and school nursing, to try and reduce the 'policy practice gap,' and to keep health visiting on the agenda at a time when all others seemed to want to dismiss it. A year later, in 2001, it enabled us to mount the 'Mayday' campaign to try and keep health visiting in statute. We did not succeed then, but did manage to get a lot of assurances from ministers that were not kept, and which are key to the current CPHVA campaign to get health visiting restored to statute. As a group, we have held study days and meetings in the past, and responded to a number of key consultations, and aspire to keep colleagues with each other, share ideas and 'intelligence' and support, when needed. Senate featured as one of the case studies in an academic paper in 2003:

Gill Kirton (2003) Possibilities for remote participation in trade unions: mobilising women

activists. Industrial Relations Journal 34 (4), 319–333. best wishes

Many congratulations to and team for all they have

achieved through Senate over the years. Many important professional issues

have been discussed, no doubt to the ultimate benefit of children, families and

public health. It seems most appropriate that the birthday is shared with International

Woman’s Day as it was pioneered by a group of very able women!

I would like to add my birthday greetings to SENATE and to especially thank

for her tenacity and sheer determination to restore health visiting to

statute and enabling all of us to be part of such a successful social network.

Here's to the next decade and the future of health visiting and school nursing!

Yes, congratulations Cheryll. I gather she came to notice for her dogged insistence that there is an evidence available to support the need for health visiting and the way it is commissioned, so it should be taken into account; also all that work with NICE collaborating centre and work in starting up the Academy of nursing, midwifery and health visiting research. Definitely all worth a 'mention in dispatches.'On 8 Mar 2010, at 12:49, Meerabeau wrote:Hear hear. Unfortunatley I think I have deleted the email from maggie regarding this topic , could I trouble you to resend this ? On a personal note I have forwarded lots of the information on here to hv's and sn's . Happy birthday Senate! Senate provides welcome critique and common sense

comments on a wide range of policy and practice issues, and in an accessible

format. Thanks to everyone for their contributions over the past decade,

especially to whose tenacity and perseverance keep us all going.

Best wishes

Gill
