Guest guest
I took my little dog (Java) to the vet on Wednesday afternoon. I did not know what to expect but I went with an open mind in the hopes I would find an open mind. My vet is in his 70's but is a great guy. He felt the open wound on her neck was an infected cyst and put some antibiotic solution into it. So...I launched into the " what about Lyme and Bartonella " conversation I had prepared. He listened attentively, pulled out his Vet journal, poured through it and talked about tick bites being a rarity in Washington state. I told him about the bird mite infestation, about them being a possible vector for Lyme and Bartonella. I told him that even fleas could be vector. That I might have Lyme and Bartonella. He listened and asked questions and said " I do not know everything and there is always more to learn " . So, he actually became pretty amped up and said, let's treat her as if she has Lyme disease. IF her lameness improves and the sore heals, she might very well have Lyme or Bart. So, we started her on Amoxycillin for two weeks. Normal treatment is Doxy, but with her weakened stomach, he wanted to go easy on her and doxy can cause vomiting and diarrhea. But he said if I should have Lyme diseases or Bart, then we should have her tested and then determine the next steps. Java has already shown improvement. He would like to have me provide him with any information I can find on mites or fleas as vectors of lyme disease or bartonella in dogs. I have not had any luck finding this....does anyone know of any publications along these lines? That would be very helpful. Many thanks, Terry

Guest guest
Oh I am so terribly sorry for your little dog. She sounds like just the bravest little thing. I sincerely hope and pray that somehow a miracle happens and she will be okay and well for you for many years. It is so terribly hard to see such a beloved friend suffer so. Java is my little friend. As I write on the laptop she is lying right behind it on the bed. Ever attentive. I am worried that the Amoxycillin she is taking is too much for her. I started her on it yesterday and ever since, she has walked slowly with her little back all hunched up. I know that abx can cause herxing in humans as the bacteria and parasites die off, so I would imagine the same can happen to a dog. Her reaction further convinces me that she is as much a victim of these bird mites and the fungi as any of us. In fact, I sometimes think she is even more victimized because she can not put all kinds of oils on her and take showers three times a day. Plus she is closer to the ground without any protection on her little feet. I would pick her up and carry her everywhere if I could. I encourage her to stay outside where I think she will be pestered less, but she won't have it. She must be at my side always, and she is not very fond of showers no matter how much I explain to her that she needs them. I truly hope the abx will help her get well. Take care of you and your little friend...survivors together is a bond not easily broken. Terry > > >I took my little dog (Java) to the vet on Wednesday afternoon.
