Guest guest
HI Terry: I hope you are doing well and making a strong recovery from bypass surgery. My father had this surgery (quintuple) over two years ago and he is doing well although he also has Alzheimers. Thanks for the book suggestions, I also have enjoyed these and found them helpful. Guest guest
Hi Leah, Can you believe I wrote back to you (a book as usual) and before I could finish it, my computer crashed and now I have to start over again! grrrrrrrrrrr! LOL Oh well, maybe that's God's way of telling me to shut up! LOL Anyway, yes, I truly feel blessed with my children. Remember, however, they are older now, not little kids! When your kids are older, you will have the same experience! I can't say that I felt as blessed when they were 5, 6, 7, etc. LOL Then they were big pains in the butt like all kids! LOL I am so glad you are " back " ! I missed your posts alot. You are all still in my prayers every day. I am sure that Cameron will be ok. I know this has to be hell for you....waiting is the worst. Has he had apnea since he was a baby or is it relatively new? I am so glad that you have access to good medical care. Walter is certainly nationally known and respected. I know it was really hard for me to start posting again. I just didn't have the energy or something. But now that I have, I am glad I did. I do feel alot better. There's so much support in this group. It is a blessing. I think about you all the time. The down-side to the group is that we are so spread out (all over the country) that we can't " be there " for each other. Please know that I am there for you " in spirit " . Hang in there. Guest guest
Terry, I truly sympathize with what you are going through. The only thing I could think of to add is can you take for a ride in the car. Brook really loves this when he is going stir crazy on weekends or holiday breaks with no school. I don't know how difficult it would be but it might really be worth it. Sending good wishes to you and your family. Marisa
Guest guest
Terry, One more thought for , does he like bubbles. If he does you can buy battery operated and musical bubble blowers. Brook has one that blows bubbles and when the bubbles land on it ,iteither plays a melody or a musical note. It looks like a large plastic ice cream cone with the cone part being green. I think we got it at ToysR US. If you can't find it and think he might like it I would be happy to send you mine. Let me know. Guest guest
Hi Gail & All, I want to say thank you to all of you for your prayers and support and a special Thanks to Leah and Gail who were there for me! Saturday was tough but we all got through it. The service was very nice and I think it at least gave some closure to Garrett and Touche. As my husband said, their lives are forever changed, but they have been relying heavily on Faith and the support of family to get them through this sad time. On a lighter note, my kids (and their kids) all went home today, my Respite worker is back from vacation, and I feel like there is light out there once more! LOL I love seeing all my kids and grandkids, but our house is small and the chaos is unbelieveable when they all stay here at one time! had a few Mellaril moments over the weekend! LOL Thank you again to all of you for support and prayers! Terry PS. Did I mention that can get out of his cast? Oh yes! And get out of it he does, every chance he gets! Guest guest
Hi Gail, We are all ok, thanks for asking. Garrett and Touche are managing. is still in the cast, so to speak. He keeps taking it off. I called the doctor on Friday to see if I could just put it on him at night like he intends to do with the brace (I hope). He said we should try to " tough it out " until we see him in two weeks. This is a man without any kids and for sure has never dealt with a kid like . LOL Soooo, he pulls it off; I put it back on and on and on. LOL Terry
Guest guest
Thanks Marisa, I am feeling better although for a few days there it was pretty tough. The cast comes off on May 4, in two weeks. We are ALL looking forward to that! LOL We have been including you and your family in our prayers. I hope all is well with you. Guest guest
Terry, Thanks we are hanging in here, my grandmother was a little better yesterday at the hospital, although she may not really recover to where she was before all of this happened. My sister Jackie who is an internist, my sister and I went to visit yesterday. We were asking the nurse some questions about how her labs were, etc., and the stupid nurse said that my Grandmother's systems were shutting down. So Jackie said I'm her granddaughter and a physician and I'd like to look at the labs. As a matter of fact everything had improved and she was more responsive which my sister pointed out to the nurse. This nurse was really insensitive and ignorant. We were really not to happy that that nurse decided to tell us that. And my sister was wondering what the nurses are telling the families of her patients at the hospital where she works. Anyway we'll be back today to see how she is doing. Thanks for keeping us in your prayers. Marisa
Guest guest
Marisa, It really is scary, isn't it?! You are really lucky that your sister is an Internist and has access to the medical records. I have always thought that one of the hardest parts of any hospitalization and/or illness is getting competent medical care and information! Hang in there. We are praying for you and your family. Guest guest
Terry, You know that is very interesting because Brook was seeing a pediatric neurologist from the time he was 15 months and she never mentioned the possibility of autism. We told her last year in August when we saw her for a reoccurrence of seizures that we thought Brook also had autism and she thought we were probably correct but wanted us to get him diagnosed by a developmental pediatrician. I am so sorry you had to go through the agony of a possible diagnosis of progressive deteriorating brain disorder. We were in the same kind of hell when Brook was seen by Dr. Umansky at Children's Hosp Oakland who was supposed to be an expert on DS. He even denied that children with DS were more likely to have seizures, which is completely incorrect. I think that was pretty much what Dr. Umansky was trying to get across to us also that Brook was so severe that he would never be able to do anything. That was the worst day of my life and also why I have been so reluctant to see another developmental pediatrician, who I feel will once again give me the bad news that Brook is not doing very well etc. Marisa
Guest guest
Terry, Yes, definitely Terry. I don't find it easy to believe them when they tell me he is talking either.LOL Marisa
Guest guest
Terry, I know how difficult it can be with Brook to take him anywhere. I never take him to the grocery store anymore. Once in a while he goes to Costco and ends up in the cart, but only if dh comes too. I used to take him more before my daughter was born but after that there was no way to handle Brook and a baby or toddler at the same time. I have had them both going in different directions at the same time etc. At his old school when I used to pick him up the aides had to help because Gennie wanted to be carried and Brook wanted to take off somewhere. Plus he hates shopping so why make him miserable. This year however, his whole class goes on a fieldtrip every Friday and I think it is doing him good. They still have to have a one on one for him during these trips but he must be learning something about how to behave out in public. We do take him out with us but only to certain places he would enjoy or when my dh can come too. Sometimes he does well at Miles' basketball games and sometimes he just wants out now! And I definitely think it is an eye opener for the school to see how difficult it can be taking Brook out. One of his goals in his IEP this year is to be able to tolerate an assembly for more than X amount of minutes. He can't take all the noise and people and they usually have a hard time controlling him, etc., and have to leave after a little while. That is one of the reasons that I need my respite, because it is so hard to take him anywhere. Thank goodness my respite care provider can watch him tomorrow when we have the prayer vigil for my grandmother and that Monday he will be in school for the funeral. There is no way in the world you could take him to something like that, and of course all family members will be there so they wouldn't be able to watch him for me either. Also my parents have arranged a private room at a restaurant after the prayer vigil and my Mom said it was to help with Brook so he can wander around but he wouldn't be able to leave the room. Otherwise usually my poor dh has to hold on to him and reseat him every few minutes because he tries to leave the table constantly. Restaurants can be very difficult especially if it is a nice one and the meal takes time. Good Grief! What we go through!
