IRC

We now have our own IRC channel which you can access 24 hours a day, even from WebTV.For those of you who don't know, IRC stands for "Internet Relay Chat".

It gives you the ability to chat to other people, in a "chat room", but you access it via a server close to you which makes it faster, and it is NOT java based!.

In the world of IRC, chatrooms are called "Channels" Our Channel is called # and is ONLY available from DALnet servers.

INFORMATION FOR "PC" USERS

You will need to download the IRC software (free - click on icon above). We suggest MIRC as it is easy to use and already has all the DALnet servers listed in it.

When you have downloaded the software you will need to install it into your computer. Follow the instructions and if you have any problems contact Gwydion.

Here are the steps to follow once the software is installed on your computer:-

1)Run MIRC

2) Close the "about MIRC" window

3) If the "mirc Options" window does not open, go to the File menu and select Options

4) Select "DALnet" from the "IRC Servers" pulldown

5) From the second list, select a server which is geographically close to you

6) Enter your name and email address where indicated

7) Enter a nickname. This must be a single word. For example, mine is GwydionElderwyn. As IRC has many thousands of users, it's quite possible that someone may have used the nickname you entered if it is common. So in 'Alternative', enter a nickname which is less likely to be copied

8) Click on the 'Connect to IRC server' button

9) You should see a whole bunch of stuff happen in the "Status" window Eventually, you will be prompted with the "mIRC channels folder" window. Where it says "Enter the name of channel to join" type in # and press enter

10) Another window will appear. On the right hand side, you will see a list of everyone currently chatting in the room. It may be only you! The largest part of the window is where what people type appears. The one-line window at the bottom is where you type

11) Type the word Hello and press enter. After a brief pause, you should see your nickname appear in the large part in brackets, followed by what you typed. e.g. <GwydionElderwyn> Hello

12) That's it. From now on, you can see what everyone types, and everyone can see what you type.

13) To quit, you can select "Disconnect" from the File menu, or just close IRC.

INFORMATION FOR "WEB TV" USERS

(no downloads required)

First, make a note of which of these servers is closest to you. Then make a note of the server name (eg, for Kuala Lumpur, the server name is coins.dal.net) and the port number (in this case, 6663-6668,7000 which means any number from 6663-6668 inclusive, or 7000). The usual port number for IRC is 6667
