Guest guest
There are around 5.1 Million people living with HIV / AIDS in India. The epidemic is fast spreading and very shortly we will surpass Africa in terms of number of people with HIV infection. When the country is in such an alarming situation, it was shameful to watch a news clipping in NDTV on the eve of World AIDS Day, in which some of the Members of Parliament were reluctant to even talk about HIV / AIDS. The highlight was that a MP told that any one can get cured of HIV / AIDS if they chant “RAM, RAM and take bath in River Ganges”. This really demoralizes people who work among the rural population; trying to reduce stigma discrimination and educate people on preventive methods. Because, these kinds of “irresponsible single line statements” that too by an elected parliamentarian spoils the whole lot of work done among the community, across the country, with the aid of foreign funds. It is high time that the Government takes steps to educate the elected members on this serious issue, which is going to have a major impact on the economy of the country in the days to come. At the same time may I request the media, in the larger interest of the country, to sensor these kinds of false statements.
