Guest guest
In case you did not get to read the Zapper Update... We scrapped the article we planned to run and focused on the news out of the White House today. We also took a jab at my previous (once proud) craft... I just can't believe those high paid network folks don't understand the difference between an ICD and pacemaker. See http://www.ZapLife.org I suppose these clowns also think Monsoon and Blizzard are interchangeable terms. A daily trade journal had the guts to run an editorial I wrote today regarding the ICD reporting short comings. See http://www.tvspy.com/shoptalk.cfm?page=5 The news page is loaded with reports on VP Cheney... and will be updated as appropriate all weekend. See http://www.ZapLife.org/zap2.htm Today's update also includes a note how you can make a little money on the side by finding and referring potential AED customers to me. Guest guest
I agree with your political viewpoint of the procedure. The other thing I found interesting is during an interview on PBS the Veep kept referring to the unit as a type of pacemaker. Either he did not understand what he is getting into ( common) or it was calculated to minimize the political impact. The also had a great interview with a cardiologist from town University on the same show. The commentator, with his ignorance and obvious liberal political leanings was trying to trick the doc into saying that Dick is on the way out, you cannot do anything with a defib, not even brush your own teeth, and somehow the unit made you dumb. The doc dispelled all of those subtle claims and did a great job of saying " life goes on, and for most people just fine. " Maybe the only truth was the dumb part as my memory is getting poorer by the day.....<g> Pete E ____________________________________________ " If you want to live a long and happy life, get a chronic disease and manage it. Guest guest
I, for one, would be truly amazed if the Vice President--or any other very high ranking leader--were to join this or any other e-group. It is just not realistic to think that they might. (They might pop up once, the way politicians do at Little League games, church bake sales and Golden-Ager meetings, but that is not what they do or will do with their time.) For all the jokes about the Vice President not having anything to do, and even if one agrees with FDR Veep Nance Garner's comment that the job wasn't worth a " hill of beans, " I don't think that Mr. Cheney has the time to read and certainly not the time to answer our postings. And that assumes that he even has an inclination to do so. Remember that these (high level politicians) are people for whom breakfast is a meeting at work and golfing is a four hour negotiation without lawyers and accountants. And does anyone truly believe that the Secret Service would tell the Vice president that it was a good idea to share e-mail time with a bunch of average Americans who have not been cleared ( " vetted " in their jargon) for safety and security purposes? No, I don't think we'll be seeing Mr. Cheney appearing periodically on our little forum, although we might certainly receive a thank you for the invitation and the usual politician's promise to keep in touch. neither he, nor any other politician that I know of would want to put themselves in what would appear to them to be a shooting gallery for a very narrow segment of the electorate, one that holds some very real political dangers should a gaffe be made on line and holds little or no potential for political advantage. Of course I could be wrong as I have many times in the past, but I am not getting my hopes up. Bill BTW Did anyone hear Leno's monologue last night? He said referred to Cheney's description of an AICD as a " pacemaker plus " as sounding like it came from Ron Popeil, the guy with all those kitchen gadgets sold on infomercials. He also said that Cheney's medical condition means that Bush is just a heartbeat away from being President. Guest guest
i agree with you bill. not only would the v.p. not become a member of our elite little group. even if he had the time the powers that be would advise against it. but i do beleive this, at some point in the near future he will most surely visit our site and read some postings or archives. at the very least someone on his staff will be assigned to do so. bob in pa -- Re: The Big Guy Gets an ICD! Guest guest
Sue... I spent the night for replacement... but only because surgery was so late in the day... 4 PM... I was scheduled for 6 AM but kept getting bumped ... ICD placement is considered same day surgery now that they don't have to open chest or run leads from abdomine ... and they aren't done in OR but in EP lab ... I'm quite sure VP Cheney isn't going to be bumped for his Electrophysiological Study or his ICD placement so he'll probably be done very early in the day and sent home in the evening... I'd be surprised if he had to spend the night in the hospital... That's probably why all was scheduled for a Saturday... time to recoup over the weekend. And it does bother me that neither the VP or many others are referring to the ICD as a defibrillator... it's not a pacemaker... no wonder SSD kept telling me I didn't qualify for disability cause my " pacemaker " was doing very well by me \o/ ... I feel the VP is trying hard to down-play all of this so his opponents will not have more ammo w/which to try to push him out of office... but in doing so, he's really not helping the public understand what it is that we all have. Guest guest
While in office Dick Cheney may not have the time to regularly read the ZapMail, but perhaps when it comes to distributing funds the administration will be more sympathetic towards ICD researchers and manufacturers. When he leaves office (at which age he'd be no more than 75, assuming he succeeds W for two terms), he would still be able to be a high-profile campaigner for ICDs. Vice-President Cheney's position is probably similar to that of former Florida Republican senator Connie Mack, who has campaigned vociferously on cancer, which both he and his wife overcame. Rich just had his done this past January. Even tho they did it earlier in the morning (around 9a he was taken into the EP lab), he did have to spend the night. And when he went back in April because it was misfiring, we were told that if they had to deal with the leads in his heart, or replace the unit, it would mean another overnight stay. Fortunately, it was only a screw loose so he got to leave that afternoon. I suppose different hospitals/doctors have different policies on such things. ?? > that neither the VP or many others are referring to the ICD as a > defibrillator... it's not a pacemaker... no wonder SSD kept telling > me I didn't qualify for disability cause my " pacemaker " was doing > very well by me \o/ ... I agree with ya. Well, partly.... it IS partially a pacemaker, if he received the same type that Rich has. Rich's will pace him out of an irregular rhythm; it only delivers the 'punch in the chest' when the pacing fails to work. Or in his case, when it had a loose set-screw and misread his body movements as an arrthymia and zapped him! It was freaky.... his interrogation showed him as having over 800 episodes of arrhythmia in less than 2 weeks! Glad that is fixed. But i agree.... i wish they'd have more technical details, and stop downplaying the seriousness of this. Let's face it, that man is what they call 'a heartbeat away from the Presidency'. Can you imagine the stress??? If I were Mrs. Cheney, i'd sure be urging him to consider stepping down, just for his own health's sake. Sue -- " She was not quite what you would call refined. Guest guest
I think I will write a letter, not email, to the vice-president. I know the president's address, but what about the vice president's? I hope ICDs will get a lot more publicity and arouse awareness of rhythm disorders. Sometimes I have to describe mine as "a type of pacemaker with a really big battery and a lot of bells and whistles" so people will understand. In my case, my ICD does have a built in pacemaker and my atria are paced about 85% of the time and my ventricles 100% of the time. Therefore, the main service my ICD provides me is pacing. Anyone know the vice-president's address?
