Coastal Andhra is AIDS Corridor

New Delhi, Oct 06 - The Centre has identified the coastal belt in

Andhra Pradesh as an AIDS Corridor, Union Minister of State for Health

Panabaka Lakshmi said on Tuesday. AP figures second only to Tamil Nadu

in the high incidence of AIDS.

Lakshmi sought UK aid to fight AIDS in the country. The DFID provides

financial help through Naco for targeted interventions in five focus

States - AP, Orissa, West Bengal, Kerala and Gujarat. It has plans to

expand the programme to Madhya Pradesh.

The UK government pledged to step up its support for India's efforts

in curtailing the spread of HIV/AIDS and launched a new global

strategy for tackling the menace.
