Guest guest Posted August 10, 2004 Report Share Posted August 10, 2004 The Population Council: Call for Proposals FELLOWSHIP FOR HEALTH AND POPULATION INNOVATION (FORMERLY THE MACARTHUR FUND FOR LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT) 2005 – 2006 The Population Council, an international, non-profit, non- governmental organisation established in 1952, seeks to improve the well-being and reproductive health of current and future generations around the world and to help achieve a humane, equitable, and sustainable balance between people and resources. The Council undertakes biomedical, social science and operations research. It works through its four regional and 14 country offices. The Council's Regional office for South and East Asia is located in New Delhi, India. FELLOWSHIP FOR HEALTH AND POPULATION INNOVATION Population Council, India, through a programme, funded by the D. and T. MacArthur Foundation, provides fellowships to those individuals who wish to evolve innovative approaches including action and/or research initiatives in the areas of population, reproductive and sexual health and rights and generate sound evidence to inform programmes and policy as well as potential replicability and scaling up of these approaches. We invite proposals for projects that focus on: Young people's sexual and reproductive health and choice, including for example, ways of facilitating delays in the timing of marriage and first birth and the exercise of informed choice; and of promoting sexual health and rights of young people including for example gender- sensitive sexuality and life skills education for young people, confidential health services and programmes for young men that promote sexual responsibility; innovative measures for keeping girls in school and implications for health and marriage age Making pregnancy safer, including for example, access to appropriate care including emergency obstetric care, empowering women to make healthy choices and ensuring skilled care in the ante-natal, delivery and postpartum periods; understanding key underlying legal and/or social factors affecting maternal mortality and morbidity and reproductive decision-making Addressing the needs of women experiencing unintended pregnancy, enabling access to safe abortion Contraceptive use dynamics and decision making and strategies that enable informed contraceptive choices for women and men; dual protection; and address unmet need for contraception; access to non- terminal and emergency contraception Quality of a range of reproductive health services, including for example, reproductive tract and sexually transmitted infections; HIV; pregnancy; infection; safe abortion; and pregnancy-related care Strengthening men's involvement and responsibility in sexual and reproductive matters, including women's health-seeking behaviour and prevention of infection and violence Developing models to improve dialogue between diverse groups including women's groups, health care providers and policy makers Advocating for changes needed in health, educational, and legal policies to create the political will needed for their implementation within the framework of human rights, gender equity and equality Proposals are invited for projects that address one or more of the above topics. The proposal should include (in not more than 10 pages OR about 5000-6000 words): Background and rationale Goals and objectives Project description, or proposed activities through which you will achieve stated objectives Policy and programmatic implications Dissemination plans Estimated duration and budget Information on how will this project be innovative and different; social changes the project aims to accomplish Personal history including educational background, professional experience, and other projects carried out in this area; indicate how this project will contribute to your personal development Statement indicating why you consider yourself suitable for the fellowship. Any other information you may consider relevant WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR The Council is looking for candidates with innovative ideas, leadership potential, and a strong desire for personal and professional development. The fellowship programme is open to Indian women and men resident in any part of the country who are between the ages of 25 to 45 years, and are in the mid-stage of their careers. However, this restriction may be relaxed in the case of women who started their careers late. Applicants may be from any sector including: non-government organisations, women's organisations, the corporate sector, media or academia. The fellowships are awarded to applicants from any discipline: social sciences, medicine and health, management, law, education etc. Preference will be given to individuals who have: A plan to develop professional capacity and knowledge A strategy to influence and impact policy and public debate Clearly defined and realistic objectives Indicators of progress towards those objectives SELECTION PROCESS Selection of fellows takes place once a year through a competitive process. Fellowships are for full-time work and are awarded for a period of one to two years. The fellowship year is from August 1, 2005 to July 31, 2006. The deadline for submission of applications is September 15, 2004. Short-listed candidates will be invited to submit full proposals.
