Guest guest Posted September 10, 2004 Report Share Posted September 10, 2004 Job Announcements: Project Parivartan, a Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) funded project awarded to Yale University (USA) to conduct research and evaluation of structural interventions for HIV prevention among high risk populations in India in collaboration with CARE India and other partners in the BMGF funded Avahan: India’s AIDS Initiative, is seeking applicants for the following positions: STUDY ETHNOGRAPHER: Summary: Reporting to the India Project Manager, the Study Ethnographer will be based in Rajahmundry, Andhra Pradesh with potential travel to a second site in Maharashtra and periodic travel to the Central Project Office in Chennai. S/he will participate as an observer in a wide variety of key activities relating to initial and ongoing implementation of a community led structural intervention with sex workers led by CARE India. The overall purpose of this field work will be to develop an analytical understanding of the factors associated with successful implementation of the intervention and to assess the context of risk among sex workers. This is a three year project. Job Duties: * Conduct organizational ethnography, keeping extensive field notes * Provide to intervention staff, as well as to the research team, regular feedback on intervention implementation and contextual risk factors for sex workers * Conduct focus group and key informant interviews with sex workers and key stakeholders, such as police, community leaders, non-sex worker community residents, local business owners, etc. * Collect and analyze media reports, meeting minutes, and other text data * Code, summarize, and assist with analysis of qualitative data * Other duties as deemed necessary by the India Project Manager Requirements: * Degree in social sciences, public health, social work, or allied field * At least two years experience conducting field work/ethnography * Well developed knowledge of and familiarity with conducting qualitative analyses in social science research, including participant observation, focus groups, or in-depth interviews * Excellent written, verbal, organizational, and interpersonal skills * Ability to work with diverse populations, castes, and social backgrounds. INDIA PROJECT MANAGER Summary: The India Project Manager will direct and manage all administrative and research related activities in India associated with Project Parivartan. S/he will be based at the Central Project Office in Chennai, but also will maintain responsibility for general oversight of field offices in Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra. The India Project Manager will report directly to the Principal Investigator located at Yale University. This is a three year project. Job duties: · Oversee day-to-day administrative operation of a multi-site, international research project including supervising of an administrative and research staff as well as ensuring that work plans and timelines are implemented, designing and implementing policies and procedures relating to personnel, finance, and communication among the India Central Project Office in Chennai (CPO), field offices, and the Central Project Office at Yale University · Oversee operations related to systematic, scientific assessment of two community-led structural intervention projects, including participating with the Yale-based research team in developing and implementing both qualitative (participant observation and semi-structured interviewing) and quantitative (serial cross-sectional survey based on respondent driven sampling) research components · Participate with the Yale-based research team in analyzing qualitative and quantitative data; and in developing manuals, reports, presentations, and manuscripts (for peer review journals) based on these analyses · Maintain regular contact with the PI at Yale University to discuss progress on the research activities · Make presentations at local/national meetings on project activities · Travel to the two field sites where projects with CARE India will be implemented on a regular basis and travel to other parts of India, depending on the location of the other research collaborations · Serve as a liaison with the Yale-based project director, including overseeing coordination of the visits of the Yale PI and Project Manager when they travel to India · Travel to the United States to meet with the PI and the staff from the Yale Project Office once every year Requirements: · Ph.D. in public health, social work, or allied field with at least 3 years experience in directing/ implementing HIV/AIDS projects; will consider a master’s level education if applicant has more than 5 years experience directing HIV/AIDS projects in India and/or other countries · At least 5 years experience working on projects related to HIV and AIDS in India · Fluency in English and Hindi required; proficiency in Telugu, Marathi, or Tamil preferred · Capable of independently supervising and coordinating a staff of approximately 8-10 people some of whom will be located off-site · Experience in managing externally funded research projects that include qualitative and quantitative methodologies · Experience in managing high-level business responsibilities, including personnel and financial administration · Well developed computer skills – word processing, spreadsheets, email, SPSS, SAS, or an equivalent software for statistical analysis, software for qualitative data analysis (e.g. NUD*IST, AtlasTI), and experience in database development and management · Excellent communication skills – oral and written · Excellent organizational skills and ability to multi-task Salary: Up to Rs 70,000 per month, depending on skills and experience To assure full consideration, please email (or mail) resume, cover letter describing interest in position, and names of at least 3 references, by September 27, to: Hanck Project Manager Yale University Center for Interdisciplinary Research on AIDS (CIRA) 40 Temple Street, Suite 1B New Haven, CT 06510 <mailto:sarah.hanck@...>sarah.hanck@...
