Hi Bob and :

Welcome. Lots and lots (!) of potential questions, which if you wish

you could think about answering when you get around to it.

For example: how long have you been on alternate day feeding? What

was the principal reason for deciding to do it? Do you consume

pretty much zero calories on the fasting days? Have you had tests

done before and after starting (lipids, blood pressure, blood sugar

and so on) and what changes have you seen in them? What is it you

feel so good about? Have you noticed any negative aspects to it?

Approximately what are your heights, and your weights before starting

and now? Approximately how many calories are you currently consuming?

We are somewhat familiar with alternate day feeding in rodents -

there is at least one study on this in the files here - but Maco is

the only person I know of here who has/is trying it themselves.

Rodney.

> For example: how long have you been on alternate day feeding? Well,

we recently started.

What

> was the principal reason for deciding to do it? Both of our Fathers

have had strokes recently and we have been concerned for them and as a

result we have been reading the letters here and recently purchased

the book The Longevity diet by Delaney and Walford.

I am a pioneering type of individual who had the second achilles

lengthening for people with CP in the late 50' and early 60's. I have

CP. Seeing my dad who ate so little come back from Quad-bypass

surgery has inspired me. He ate so little and yet seemed to thrive

and become stronger. It is amazing to me to see what happened to him

on so few calories. Religiously speaking we have known of " fasting "

from our studies in religious literature. So, that has been an

inspiration.

Do you consume

> pretty much zero calories on the fasting days? Yes. Although, we

have considered a 24 hour fast and then Low carbs and then 24 and low

carbs and then 24 and high carbs. This was a suggestion by a body

fitness friend at the YMCA.

But, right now we are just 12 hours on and 36 hours off. On the off

days is taking 3 apples. My regimen is water only on off days.

Feeding days are 35% Protein 45% Carbs and 20% Fats. These are the

percentages we are shooting for.

Have you had tests

> done before and after starting (lipids, blood pressure, blood sugar

> and so on) and what changes have you seen in them? Yes, I have had

some tests done, but those are not our reasons for being interested in

CR.

What is it you

> feel so good about? Honestly, we feel more energy from it and do not

feel deprived from it and are happy to say we do not feel hunger pangs

much. Also, feeling more alert.

Have you noticed any negative aspects to it? Not really other than

the psychological idea that we should eat at a given time we used to

eat at. The only real negative is a bit of grumpiness or stress

related to having not eaten.

> Approximately what are your heights, and your weights before starting

> and now? Bob's 5'6 and 5'4.

Bob 164 lbs. and 120 lbs. and presently Bob 153lbs. and 117

lbs. We have our BMI, BMR,Impedance, Fat %, Fat Mass, FFM, TBW etc.

Approximately how many calories are you currently consuming? Around

1000 kcal. per day on a daily CR regimen. But, we have upped the

protein and calories for ADF. does not feel comfortable with a

no feeding day so she takes the apples.

Bob and : What is CP? Is it Cerebral Palsey?

We do not recommend going too low on calories. Certainly no lower than 1000 a day. That could be dangerous to your health/

Yes, CP...I had the first CP achilles lengthening in the State of Texas.

At 5-6 years old I was told I had a choice to stay in braces or on

crutches or I could have this " new operation " . They promised me it

would not hurt too much...but that wasn't true. It hurt like the

dickens and took many months of recovery. I had been a student of the

CP center in Austin Texas. I was a March of Dimes Easter Seal child.

My parents and I agreed to have the surgery. At about the same time

my mother was pushing the State of Texas to allow me into PUBLIC

school. This was against the wishes of those running the schools in

the state of Texas at that time. They would not agree to allow me

into school unless I was tested by the State. So, my parents took me

to the University of Texas when I was 6 and had me tested. The result

was I entered school after my Achilles surgery and I went to first

grade in a wheel chair.

After going to Public School graduating Elementary and High School I

went to College and got a Bachelor Arts degree.

Hi Bob & :

Thank you for that comprehensive response. I hope you will find

a helpful resource. You will be helpful to everyone

here as an example of alternate day fasting. Since as far as I am

aware not many others here have been doing CRON 'twelve-hours-feeding-

thirty-six-hours-fasting' up until now. (The lab mice have been

doing it for a very long time, and greatly benefitting!)

I see that Bob's BMI has dropped from 26.5 to 24.7. So presumably

you had been pretty much ad lib prior to making the change. ,

whose BMI has dropped from 20.6 to 20.1 seems to have been pretty

slim all along.

You will find plenty of people here who think that 20% of calories

from fat is very appropriate.

It will be very interesting to see how your test results change after

you have been doing this for, say, six months. (For example, I found

that over twelve months my systolic BP dropped one point for each

pound of weight I shed.)

Since caloric restriction is far from being a fully scientifically

defined science, around here some people feel that it may be

inadvisable to go to extremes until more is known. An average intake

of 1000 calories a day is certainly on the low end of the scale.

Gradually dropping caloric intake from pre-CR levels over a period of

a couple of years is certainly not going to entail unanticipated

risks. Whereas a cold-turkey drop from, say, 2500 to 1000, possibly

might. Just a thought.

Good to have you here.

Rodney.
