Hi Bob & :

There are a number of studies some of which have been posted here

which suggest a direct link between alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), of

which flax contains a lot, and prostate cancer.

So my personal approach to this one is to try to avoid fats in

general, flax in particular, and get much of my fat intake from

eating a small amount of fish almost every day, and some nuts.

The situation is likely different for females. ALA does seem to be

quite *beneficial* for CVD.

Rodney.

Call me paranoid, but I used to paint with flaxseed oil, and since it's been replaced with a lot of alkyd products, I suspect someone had to find a use for it. Nothing like the human body for disposal of things you can't dump in the ocean.

Soy oil is the number one source of ALA if you look at availability, price, how much is used in processed food. It's in the meats, because they feed the food animals soy products. I would really be surprised if anyone in the U.S. has a deficiency problem outside the hospital.

If there is an ideal ratio, I cannot see how you would mathematically maintain it considering all the other sources of LA in your typical diet.

BTW, EFAD is treated with LA not ALA.

So why would you quit eating fish?

Regards.
