Guest guest
Hello everyone, I have been spending a lot of time researching CRON solutions for vegans and have hit a brick wall. This is because of the difficulty of obtaining enough Omega-3 from vegan sources. Flax seed, hemp, walnuts, pumpkin seeds, etc. are all supposed to have ALA, which is a precursor form of Omega-3. Unfortunately, the conversion ratio of ALA into DHA and/or EPA is less than 5%, and as low as 1% according to some studies. As our brains are 45% DHA that seems to be a problem. Of course, that is not the only need that we have for DHA and EPA. The conversion ratio may be so low because the typical diet is so high in Omega-6 fatty acids and an improper ratio of 3-6-9 Omega acids may prevent ALA from converting very efficently into DHA or EPA. My proposed solution is to use organic defatted sunflower seed meal for protein, supplemented with Lysine and Methionine from other sources. Using defatted sunflower seed meal would prevent me from getting an overload of Omega-6 and would allow me to more accurately control the 3-6-9 ratio to promote optimum conversion of ALA into DHA and EPA. The problem is that I cannot seem to find a source for organic defatted sunflower seed meal. Can anyone shed some light on my proposed solution? Does anyone know where I might obtain organic defatted sunflower seed meal? Does anyone have a vegan solution that they think solves the Omega-3 problem? I know about fish oil etc. I eat fish now but want to go back to a vegan diet. I cannot believe that a chicken can convert flax to DHA and EPA and a human cannot. It is just going to require some nutrition engineering, IMHO. bobert
