Guest guest
If patients can use the newer drugs versus the "standard therapy" whatever that is, they might lower their risk. But HTN drugs are picked as to whether they work or not to lower BP, and I have a feeling patients migrate to those that work, rather than an idealistic set. They also tend to select those they can afford. HTN can be treated with a diuretic and a older betablocker for ~75$ per year. And the "good" betablockers are not yet off patent. The combo exampled might cost 100$ per month. Not a lot for you and me perhaps, but the majority of hypertensives don't have access - that's part of the higher income folks living longer because they have access to adequate medical care. Another point is some of those calcium blockers have interesting side effects, like they eliminate migraines, stem arrhythmia. This article is a plea, perhaps to re-examine the "standard therapy", but I'm doubting that will change, in light of how many people will have to continue to do what they are doing for these other reasons. We'll see. Regards. [ ] Newer Blood Pressure Drugs Much Better "The researchers found the newer blood-pressure drugs reduced the risk of strokes by about 25 percent, heart attacks by 15 percent, cardiovascular deaths by 25 percent and new cases of diabetes by 30 percent compared with standard treatment".http://heart.healthcentersonline.com/newsstories/moderndrugscanhalvestrokeheartattack.cfm?nl=1http://snipurl.com/hohmRodney.
