Amit Bhanot This refers Nithya's request for unexplored issues in HIV/AIDS programmes, there is the need for expanded research, and increased educational and clinical outreach to people with disabilities (PWD). Because PWD are among some of the most marginalized in the world today, implications of HIV infection for them has been largely ignored. Every major risk factor linked to HIV infection is also present in the disabled populations. While all individuals with disability are at risk for HIV infection, subgroups within the disabled population - most notably women with disability, disabled adolescents and disabled individuals who live in institutions, are at especially increased risk. HIV/AIDS educational, testing and clinical programs are largely inaccessible to individuals with disability. Since roughly 10 percent of the world's population are living with one form of disability or another, disability components must be built in all developmental projects. I wish Nithya best of luck for all future endeavours. With warm regards Dr Amit Bhanot E-mail: <prghealth@...> ___________________________ Expand the horizon in HIV and Human Rights Amrutha Valli It is important to expand your horizon in HIV and Human Rights, which is very essential for present situation. Regards Amrutha E-mail: <ammureeth@...> _______________________________ c) Human rights implications of the policies and practices Cheryl Overs I suggest exploring the human rights implications of the policies and practices that govern the ways in which people affected by HIV are deployed in the Aids industry in India as peer educators and in other voluntary/semi voluntary posts. I know Human Rights Watch have done some work on this and I think it could be taken forward. Does anybody else find it odd that projects whose aims include reducing stigma and discrimination against people living with HIV and other key populations routinely pay people from those groups as little as 10% of what is paid to the NGO workers who supervise them ? I am not sure how to send this in on the Forum but I will reply personally to you. Did you study the effect on family members of people who had died because of AIDS? Here in Taiwan the stigma lives on long after the person dies. So often the family members have, trying to keep others from knowing, to make up stories and forget who they told what to when... So, they avoid meeting the neighbors, etc. Do you have anything on this problem? Thanks, Ellen E-mail: <kerriganme@...>
