" -STUBBS NEWS AND ANALYSIS Medical News & Perspectives Family Health History Hampton JAMA. 2005;294:3075. Urging adults to " know their family history, " US Surgeon General Carmona, MD, MPH, has unveiled an updated Web-based tool for organizing family health information (http://www.hhs.gov/familyhistory). The tool, called " My Family Health Portrait, " arranges information into a printout that patients can take to health care professionals to help determine risks for various conditions and diseases. The new tool was designed to make the process of gathering thorough family health information more efficient. Specifically, the tool helps individuals compile information about common diseases for each of their family members and organizes the information into a diagram or a chart. To help emphasize the importance of collecting family health histories, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently distributed family history resource materials to chronic disease and genetic experts in state health departments. Free print versions of the Surgeon General's tool are also available at the Health Resources and Services Administration's Information Center at 1-888-Ask HRSA (275-4772).
