18/11/2005 - US scientists have found a genetic pathway that might explain why

restricted calorie intake slows down the ageing process.

Researchers have previously demonstrated that dramatically reducing food intake

boosts the lifespan of mice and insects.

The new findings by a team at the University of Washington lend weight to this

earlier work by showing how this process might work, and helping researchers

investigate further how it could be used to reduce the effects of age-related

diseases like heart disease or diabetes.

Writing in today's issue of Science, the Washington team describe how they did a

genome-wide screen of yeast cells to find which genes, and their corresponding

proteins, affect lifespan.
