Guest guest
The new CSPI newsletter's (October 2005 - not at cspinet.org yet) cover story is "The Weight Debate" and discusses the (nonsensical) CDC report that those that are slightly overweight have a lower risk of dying than leaner folks. The article discusses various issues with the report such as the way smoking, prior illness and age were handled. One diagram in the article is similar to data which I re-posted in our files section some time ago from an earlier issue. (This is an Excel workbook with multiple pages.) http://tinyurl.com/8nu6j The chart in the newest issue comes from the "Archives of Internal Medicine" - here's the link to the abstract, you have to pay for the whole article, which I didn't. Versions of this chart appear in the linked presentation below. http://tinyurl.com/ex2cq Also, there is a webcast from a meeting last May at Harvard, that can be viewed at http://tinyurl.com/aeq22 I haven't watched all of it, but just the chunks associated with slides I thought might be interesting, and it's astounding that the CDC report got the press that it did, without any of the further discussion being covered. I wouldn't try this without good broadband - it's 2 hours long and downloads slides before it starts. With broadband it doesn't take long at all, but with dial-up.....
