Guest guest
Here is what has happened to me recently: I bought 100 PET bottles to store fragrance oils temporarily until I could afford the pretty cobalt glass ones. Bottled about the first 3 dozen of my fragrances, full strengty, which had been formerly stored either in glass or in HDPE with differing results - after about a year, some of the HDPE started to " pull in " , indicating oil interaction with the air around the bottle. I left the house for about 30 minutes on an errand, returned, and thought " boy, I must have spilled the amaretto & cream when I poured it. " NOT - it had, in 30 minutes or less, eaten through the PVC bottle - actually MELTED the plastic. It had been set inside a box, and the oil had proceeded to eat thru the OUTSIDE of the other bottles! Fortunately, we only lost a few pounds of oils, but these were rather expensive potpourri scents, many custom blended here. I would store for short periods only, as one listmember said, as for shipping, in HDPE, but for long term storage will use only glass. I've always stored the Essential oils in glass, but had some in plastic for personal use for blending potpourri oils. SOME are perfectly OK for long periods of time - the citrus, ginger, nutmeg, and especially Tea Tree eat thru the plastic, sometimes just interacting with the air, generally degrading the seams of the bottle causing leaks, and, in the case of the Tea Tree, causing blisters to form on the outside of the bottle rendering the oil useless. I will never use anything other than glass for Essentials. I have made some very dilute water-based Essential (and Fragrance) body splashes and room sprays, and have had good luck with the cobalt PET bottles so far - some have lasted up to 6 months, and a few are citrus scented or lemongrass based for insect sprays. Have not had experience storing lotions that have had oils added, and will be interested in seeing the experiences of others here on the list. Hope my experiences help someone else from making this costly mistake!
