Japan to fund ICMR's AIDS research programme

TIMES NEWS NETWORK [ SATURDAY, MAY 21, 2005 02:36:35 AM ]

KOLKATA: Japan on Friday assured to fund an HIV/AIDS research

programme at ICMR's premier laboratory National Institute of Cholera

and Enteric Diseases (NICED) here under its Japan International

ation Assistance (JICA) scheme.

Senior Japanese vice-minister for Foreign Affairs Shuzen Tanigawa,

who visited the facility during the day, said he would extend the

ongoing technical cooperation with NICED for five more years after

its present term ended in 2007 to provide assistance to the proposed

research.

The scheme, running for the last eight years for cholera research,

provides grants and equipment worth US dollar 4000 every year and

funds one NICED scientist to carry out research work in Japanese

laboratories, NICED Director Dr Sujit Bhattacharjee said.

" We proposed that the assistance be extended for another five years

as we want to carry out an extensive HIV/AIDS research programme and

the Japanese vice-minister agreed to it, " Bhattacharjee said.

Meanwhile, NICED was undertaking a Rs 92 crore infrastructure

development project funded by Japan to construct a new building with

an animal house and a fully furnished laboratory, he said.

The building would be completed by March 2006 and strengthen

technical wherewithal of the institute, he added.
