Guest guest Posted May 21, 2005 Report Share Posted May 21, 2005 Japan to fund ICMR's AIDS research programme TIMES NEWS NETWORK [ SATURDAY, MAY 21, 2005 02:36:35 AM ] KOLKATA: Japan on Friday assured to fund an HIV/AIDS research programme at ICMR's premier laboratory National Institute of Cholera and Enteric Diseases (NICED) here under its Japan International ation Assistance (JICA) scheme. Senior Japanese vice-minister for Foreign Affairs Shuzen Tanigawa, who visited the facility during the day, said he would extend the ongoing technical cooperation with NICED for five more years after its present term ended in 2007 to provide assistance to the proposed research. The scheme, running for the last eight years for cholera research, provides grants and equipment worth US dollar 4000 every year and funds one NICED scientist to carry out research work in Japanese laboratories, NICED Director Dr Sujit Bhattacharjee said. " We proposed that the assistance be extended for another five years as we want to carry out an extensive HIV/AIDS research programme and the Japanese vice-minister agreed to it, " Bhattacharjee said. Meanwhile, NICED was undertaking a Rs 92 crore infrastructure development project funded by Japan to construct a new building with an animal house and a fully furnished laboratory, he said.
