Guess we're just supposed to have problems or questions during the week! Having had Guidant devices for years, I'm not accustomed to the "sounds" that Medtronic icd's emit to indicate issues. My device was just implanted a year ago, and was just interrogated a couple of weeks ago. Battery life is fine. This morning I heard a series of sounds that certainly seemed to be coming from the icd. I feel fine - knock wood, have had no shocks from this device. As for checking any sort of Medtronic booklet that I might have been given at the time of implant, mea culpa. I'm not sure if I have one - and, if I do, where it is. My wife thinks we should check in with the ER, but I'm vetoing that. Any thoughts or info? Thanks! Doug in NY

I had this very issue a few months ago (it turned out not to be my ICD--to my embarrassment it was my iPod alarm!! The tones were nearly identical!!!). I had to really dig but I found the tones at the Medtronic site and what they meant/whether to call the doctor. Let me see if I can find it again... Try this: http://www.medtronic.com/physician/tachy/icd/pmgmt.html High Urgency Dual Tones (alternating high/low frequency for 30 seconds) Call physician. Immediate action Low Urgency Intermittent Tones (alternating high frequency/silence for 30 seconds) Call physician. Action may be delayed a short time Alarm OK (Non-programmable. Initiated only by magnet.) Continuous Tone (high frequency for 30 seconds) No conditions met. No action required. Guest guest
My ICD was interrogated upteen times by the EP fellows themselves. I would go to the ED. Guest guest
All, Last Monday afternoon I had chest pains I was convinced were a problem. I went to the ER and ended up spending the night. Now all the doctors all think it was heartburn but that I did the correct thing going the ER. The ER doc couldn’t rule out a problem. I feel foolish but not as foolish as I would have had there been a problem and I ignored it. Have you tried calling your EP? There is a possibility that a technician can meet you someplace to check the ICD and you will know for sure that everything is OK. You might be able to use the CareLink service to upload your information. I was told to listen for beeps at a particular time each day and to call the office if I heard something.
