UN Secretary General to visit India next week

New Delhi, Apr 20 (UNI) UN Secretary-General Kofi n will pay a

three-day official visit to India from April 26, the UN Office here

announced today.

This will be Mr. n's third visit to India as the UN Secretary-

General; the earlier trips were in April 1997 and March 2001.

On the first day of his official programme on April 27, after a

visit to Rajghat, Mr n is scheduled to meet with President A.P.J

Abdul Kalam, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, UPA Chairperson

Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition L.K. Advani and Minister of

External Affairs K. Natwar Singh.

In the course of his visit, the Secretary-General will also deliver

a lecture entitled, " In Larger Freedom - The changing role of the

United Nations " , and meet with NGOs working on HIV/AIDS issues in

India.

The Secretary-General will leave New Delhi for New York on the

afternoon of April 28.

Reforms in the UN system are expected to figure prominently during

the Secretary General's talks with Indian leaders. India will also

stake its claim for a permanent seat on the UN Security Council.

Mr n will also be apprised of India's views of various

international developments. The situation in the region,

particularly the recent visit of Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf

to India, is also expected to figure prominently during the

discussions.
