-------------------------------------------------------------------Carolyn Knight Named Executive Director, Developmental Disabilities Council   From the ODMRDD E-newsletter Pipeline:

The Ohio Developmental Disabilities Council (“DD Councilâ€) has named Carolyn Knight Executive Director.  She has been serving the organization as Acting Executive Director since late 2008, upon the retirement of Dave Zwyer.  Prior to her appointment as the agency’s Acting Director, Carolyn was Executive Director of Ohio Legal Rights Service, and was a DD Council member participating actively on various Council committees, including the Outreach Committee.  As Executive Director, Carolyn will oversee the DD Council’s many grant programs and the interactions between staff and grantees, including a focus on assuring that underserved and previously unserved populations receive the information and support they need.  Outreach to underserved/unserved populations has become one of Council’s strongest efforts over the past several years. Accepting the Executive Director position, Carolyn commented, “My hope is to give people with disabilities and their families a strong and unified voice on the myriad of issues that affect their lives.  I greatly appreciate the opportunity to serve in this way with the DD Council.â€Â  In a recent Reach Out e-Diversity newsletter E-Diversity, a publication made available through a Council grant, Carolyn shared her perspective regarding the developmental disabilities community, noting, “When we join together, the power of our community to transform our own lives lies not only in the causes we share, but among the solutions we provide.â€

Autism Society Chapter Events/Information:

Autism Society of America

New competencies to help teachers of students with autism spectrum disorders IU institute is key collaborator in developing professional competencies for teachers

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASEAug. 25, 2009 BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Council for Exceptional Children (CEC), in conjunction with the Autism Society of America (ASA), has announced the publication of professional competencies for teaching students with autism spectrum disorders.

These competencies, the result of a three-year grant funded by the Autism Society of America, will be incorporated into the CEC's resource on highly qualified teachers titled What Every Special Educator Needs to Know and endorsed by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).

" As the incidence of autism has increased, universities and colleges created their own version of competencies to guide program development, " said Pratt, director of the Indiana Resource Center for Autism at Indiana University and chair of the Autism Society Board, who worked on the competencies.

" With the release of these competencies and through the leadership of the Autism Society and the CEC, there is now a national standard that can be used for both course and program creation and for professional development in schools, " Pratt said. " This will increase the probability that new teachers will enter the classroom with the skills and knowledge needed to educate students across the autism spectrum. "

Family members and individuals on the spectrum played a key role in the competencies development process. Research and technical assistance was provided by the Ohio Center for Autism and Low Incidence (OCALI) and partners from the Network of Autism Training and Technical Programs (NATTAP), which includes the Indiana Institute on Disability and Community's Indiana Resource Center for Autism. NATTAP will be integral in the implementation and training of the use of the competencies in school districts. Additionally, the competencies will be incorporated into textbooks used by universities and integrated into a platform of 80 Autism Internet Modules currently under development.

For more information, contact Pratt at prattc@... or 812-855-6508. For more information about the Indiana Institute, visit www.iidc.indiana.edu.

About NCATE: The National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) currently accredits 632 colleges of education with nearly 100 more seeking NCATE accreditation. NCATE is a coalition of 33 member organizations of teachers, teacher educators, content specialists, and local and state policy makers. All are committed to quality teaching, and together, the coalition represents more than 3 million individuals. The U.S. Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation recognized NCATE as a professional accrediting body for teacher preparation.

About CEC: The Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) is the largest international professional organization dedicated to improving the educational success of individuals with disabilities and/or gifts and talents. CEC advocates for appropriate governmental policies, sets professional standards, provides professional development, advocates for individuals with exceptionalities, and helps professionals obtain conditions and resources necessary for effective professional practice. Boardman - Workshop: Effective Strategies for Classroom Behavior

Management

A program for K-12 teachers, administrators, and others working

with difficult, defiant, unmotivated, angry, or emotionally disturbed

children and adolescents in regular or special education classes or

alternative schools

Presented byVality Training and Development and Dr. Holzer, BS, MA, MDAbout

your instructor:  Dr. Holzer is an experienced public school

teacher as well as a psychiatrist with extensive experience working

with troubled students in schools. At present, Dr. Holzer is a behavior

analyst in a school district in Mississippi, working with a student

population of extreme-at-risk students. He is fully aware of the

challenges teachers face. He brings his extensive personal experience

as a teacher and his medical expertise to this program as well as his

experience working as a consultant to educators.

Teachers recognize that there are more students with

behavior problems in our classrooms today than in years past and that

many of the problems seem more severe. Most teachers were not trained

to deal with these problems, or with the fact that frequently they find

two, three, or even more students with serious behavior problems in one

classroom.

In this workshop Dr. Holzer, offers evidence-based strategies

to work with difficult, defiant, unmotivated, angry, and emotionally

disturbed children and adolescents. This program will provide you with

strategies to enhance learning, build self-esteem, and control

disruptive and otherwise troublesome behavior.

We will discuss the causes of these problems (conduct

disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, ADHD, depression and bipolar

disorder, bullying, societal violence, parental mismanagement, among

others) and, on this foundation, build practical strategies to maintain

behavioral control and teach effectively.

Please join us for this timely, informative workshop. We

know you are busy. Join us and we will make good use of your time. You

can expect to return to your school with practical tools. And we know

that, to be practical, management strategies have to be cost effective

in terms of time so Dr. Holzer will stress effective brief intervention

techniques in day-to-day behavior management. Over 97% of our

participants say this program “met†or “exceeded†expectations.

Cost: $165/person   DISCOUNTS: Small group discounts are as
