Dani - I haven't taken fat burners but actually was looking at Xenadrine Ephedra

Free today. Didn't buy it.

DO NOT start on diet pills. I was addicted to them for years and years. You

don't even want to know how long I was on them. I was totally addicted. The

Atkins Diet was the first one that I was able to stop taking them and I haven't

taken another one in almost 2 1/2 years. If you think you had trouble falling

asleep with the fat burners you ain't seen nothing. PLEASE - I implore you.

Just do the BFL. Remember its BFL ... the weight will come off. You will start

to feel better. And you will have done it without those kinds of aids.

Diet pills/fat burners

After reading Sherry's post, I started thinking about all the diet

pills and fat burners out there, esp. the ones that containe ephedra

and caffeine (which, as far as I know, are the only two ingredients

proven to burn fat).

I've tried taking a variety of fat burners, incl. Hydroxycut,

Xenadrine, etc., and they all make me SO anxious, irritable, shaky

and sick to my stomach. I would take maybe two pills a day (a

fraction of the recommended dosage), tops, and I'd still feel like

crap, plus, worse of all, 14 hours after taking them I couldn't fall

asleep.

Recently, I tried Xenadrine Ephedra Free, which has caffeine but not

ma huang; my body responded better to that, but I still got jittery

and sick to my stomach, and I had trouble falling asleep at night. I

tend to get insomnia, anyway, so anything with stimulants is a no,

no. My body is just real sensative to even caffeine.

I feel this pressure to take something, anything, that would help

burn fat, but I can't go around feeling like crap all day either;

it's counter productive (esp. because when I can't sleep I get the

urge to go downstairs and raid the fridge).

So my question is: Do these fat burners really make a huge

difference? Is it necessary to take them? Is there anything without

stimulants that burns fat? What kind of experience have you all had

with diet pills/fat burners? Thank you!

More likely it's the caffeine in BetaLean that makes you have to go

to the bathroom. Hydroxycut did the same thing to me when I tried it.

Dani, I have tried lots of ephedra based fat burners and was way

too jittery and an absolute crazy, drama queen. My guy at the

vitamin store recommneded ThermiCore CRT by MetRX that is a time

released formula. I have been taking everyday but Sunday, and

though I can't say for sure if it is helping with the progress, I

know that it picks me way up for a better cardio. Otherwise, it

doesn't give me that speed feeling as intensely as the others. I

wish you were closer, I'd let you try 'em. I hate trying things

osut with these big bottles, too much moola!

I don't use any fat burners/thermogenics. I'm losing weight 1-2 pounds a

week just by following the book the way it is and my doctor and I have

discussed my taking other products and she doesn't recommend it. So I

don't. The only experience I have had with pills has been my father in law's

experience with Ephedrine. He took it years ago and, as a result, his

thyroid stopped working. About 10 years later he developed type 2 diabetes

as a result of the Ephedrine and almost suffered renal failure. DH wouldn't

let me take anything with ephedrine even if I wanted to.

I started taking hydroxycut and the main side effect I got was that I couldn't

stop going to the bathroom . Now I take B-Lean and they are working

wonderfully!

Oddly enough I have not experienced any side effect from either one. I would

use the hydroxycut only on my work days, but now that I'm taking the B-Lean I

take 'em everyday and it helps me go to the bathroom for #2 since I'm usually

Anyways, that's my experience.

You just have to get rid of the marketing myth in your head that

these products 'burn fat' off your body ~ they DO NOT! They

are 'stimulants' and they increase your body's capacity to MOVE more

& sometimes eat less which results in weightloss ... they 'stimulate'

the adrenal glands (you know the fear factor gland which gives us a

rush when we need to flee) and that is why so many people who use

them say they do NOTHING for them because their adrenal glands are

working just fine thank you, its their big butts they just need to

move more! LoL! You have to understand the BIG marketing $$ behind

pushing these products on us (too good to be true? but we suck it up

anyways!) we buy them to the tune of BILLIONS of dollars looking for

that 'magic bullet' way to weightloss ~ arent we pathetic or what?

hehehe! Hard work, perseverence and knowledge of how your body works

(make it work for you instead of against you) will put you on the

path to lifetime health & fitness that you will never find in

pillform..I must say that I am not against using any thermogenics

(those of you who know me on the board know this! LoL! many

past 'debates' on this very subject!) if you choose correctly

comparing cost & ingredients, and realize that AT MOST for the

majority of people these type of supplements ONLY offer an energized

workout and NOTHING MORE than that, then you can make an educated

decision whether to add them to your program or not ~ and in the

interst of education here's a good link all about thermogenics and

how they work (or dont work) in the humanbody:

Thanks everyone for your comments re. fat burners. That's a scary

story about Serenity's father-in-law and ephedrine. I also really

appreciate Joni's informative response. I did know that pills can't

actually burn fat, and it makes me mad that the manufacturers can

claim that. What a scam!

his thyroid stopped working as a result of using ephedra type products?

definitely? i have never heard of that...yet. gulp! adrenal problems, kidney

problems, prostate problems, cardiac arrest, blood pressure problems, yes.

scary, huh?

dani, i don't think you are missing anything. there's a lot of stuff on the

market right now that doesn't contain caffeine or ephedra/ephedrine/ma huang

that are " diet aids " / " fat burners " but some of them have little to no clinical

evidence of efficacy. you can find info here and there on certain supplements

that are marketed as " fat burners " but contain little to no stimulant type

ingredients (CLA and green tea are two that immediately come to mind) but there

are so many variables in those human studies--how overweight the people were

when they started, what they were eating during the trial, the type and duration

of exercise performed, etc. etc. also, almost all clinical trials use men as

test subjects because of liability issues with women and pregnancy. so who knows

if it works for women or not? my personal experience with these type of products

is that, unlike you, i have an amazingly high tolerance for stimulants and i

really liked those products solely because they completely killed my appetite.

as soon as i stopped taking them---my appetite came back and then some! i

already have a history of problems with binge eating and yo yo dieting, so i

leave them alone now. i am the assistant manager in the supplements dept. at a

pretty big health food store and i know all of the aforementioned dangers of

these products and i know that all of the marketing on them is just hype, but

did that stop me from taking them? noooo....those hydroxycut and xenadrine ads

are soooo tempting with their before and after pictures. now i just look at my

body for life book and all of the before and after pics for

inspiration/ " temptation " --transformation temptation.

sorry this is so long---

The reason people believe the scam is because they think there is an

easy way to lose weight. There isn't. There are just ways that work,

like BFL. Plus it defeats the whole purpose of the lifestyle change

in general. What happens when you stop taking the pills? You go eat

like crazy because your appetite comes back but then your thyroid is

also screwed up so you just get fatter. Don't use them. Eating clean

and sweat equity is all that will work.

Yes, I can believe that about the thyroid.. because I took fat burners for a

while.. and I began to become hoarse a lot.. I sing.. and all of a sudden I

couldn't get the notes out anymore.. my only change was the ephedra based

pills..I stopped using them.. and it took a while but my voice came back.. I

read that hoarseness is common problem with an overactive thyroid..

no, these aren't BetaLean nor do they list caffeine in its ingredients. The

Hydroxycut made me pee a lot, but these ones actually help me... " dispose of my

solid waste " (for lack of a less vulgar term *smile*). I just read the

ingredients and it does have chitosan as part of a fiber blend.

I love that quote about not using a pill to get fat then why use a pill to lose

weight!

When I was using hydroxycut it was more so as a stimulant to maximize my

workout, specially on the days that I was draggin my butt in the mornings to the

gym and I hit the elliptical machine (which I love!) in a not so awake

mindframe.

I stopped using it b/c of the contest's rules that I'm in right now.

Instead I use the B-Lean which is the gym's brand and I love it b/c it has

fibers and for someone like me that does not eat enough fiber, this I consider

right now to be my dietary supplement for the fiber aspect.

I think we would be really silly to think that by taking " X " or " Y " pill we will

lose weight, it is just a way to help you kick off your system so you can get

going, specially for those people like me that led a very sedentary life. And

it's like anything if you don't create a routine of it, then yes stop taking the

pills and odds are that you'll gain the weight back. It has been proven that it

takes 30 days to create a habit. So my goal from the very beginning has been to

form that habit so when I get to my " ideal " weight I will know how to.

I'm half way there with forming a habit with my supplements ie taking them in

the morning, it is starting to not be a chore or a " have-to " thing, it's

starting to be automatic. I think that if they are used wisely yes they can

help you. BUT with all that being said, you need to check with a doctor before

you start taking them. For ex. the hydroxycut has a long list in the back that

says who should not take them due to x or y medical condition.

my .02 cents,

Ena.

Thanks again for all the great posts about fat burners. I was

tempted to get something, but now I definitely will not, esp. because

I know how horrible they make me feel.

I did notice that the ephedra/caffeine combo decreased my appetite a

bit, but by eating less throughout the day, I'd just end up ravenous

at night and binge. Plus, like I wrote before, I couldn't sleep. I

once went four days without any shut eye because I was taking the

pills during the day (but only 2-3 and before noon).

And it made me pee like 5 times an hour. It was really disturbing.

As soon as I left the restroom, I'd have to turn around and go back

in. I might as well have just set up a work space in there. :)

I also tried chitosan, but I've read that that hasn't been proven to

do anything, certainly not to absorb the fat you eat from your body

(and would that be a good thing anyway?). I got really bad stomach

cramps after taking it, too.

I like to drink green tea in the mornings for energy before my

workouts, and, like Rita, I'm a Fiber One freak. That cereal

rules!!!!

bathroom for #2 since I'm usually constipated, so I really like them

I think they must have fiber or something. Anyways, that's my

experience.

More likely it's the caffeine in BetaLean that makes you have to go

to the bathroom. Hydroxycut did the same thing to me when I tried it.

LOL

My husband actually started scolding the kids for " wasting " toilet

paper. I said ummm honey...I go every 20 minutes whether I need to or

not !!!

He didn't believe me.

Re: Diet pills/fat burners

Dani - Don't you have to pee a lot now? My friends get hysterical when

we go out ... I go to the theatre a lot so as soon as I get there I go

to the ladies room. When I finish, I turn around and get right back on

the line again! THEN I can't wait for intermission ... I try to be the

first one out so that I can get in fast! I made the mistake of buying

those inexpensive 4/package toilet paper? Went through 1 roll a day!

Re: Diet pills/fat burners

That cereal

rules!!!!

Rita and Dawn,

You guys are too funny. And, yes, since I drink about 3-4 quarts of

water a day (plus a couple glasses crystal light) a day, I feel like

I spend half my day in the bathroom. Sometimes I think I have an

extra small bladder or something, because, seriously, I pee A LOT.

For example, I stop drinking at about 8 pm, so I don't have to wake

up six times at night to pee (I still get up at least twice,

however). So in the morning when I wake up, 12 hours have passed

since I drank any liquid, and I still pee like four times before I

leave the house to go work-out at 9 am. What's up with that???

Plus, I have to pee like every ten miutes after I work out and right

fter I take a shower. Is that NORMAL? My friend think it's funny,

but I actually have to plan when I'm going out on the town and make

sure I don't drink anything for a couple hours beforehand, so I don't

pee my pants while searching for the bathroom. Oh, woe is me!!

Dani -

That's one of the advantages of having my 3 and 5 year old - I use them as an

excuse wherever I am " I'm so sorry to trouble you but my little girl has to go

to the bathroom... " LOL so far they haven't shouted out " NO I DON'T MOM!!! "

Oh Dani - I have to plan when I'm going out, too. And it annoys me sometimes

that my going out interferes when I haven't had enough water yet for the day!

lol But as long as it works ... I'll learn to live with it.
