Guest guest
Hi ette, Oh my gosh how long has it been since we've talked?!! What happened to your eye? And you are so young too, I'm so sorry to hear about that. Our thoughts are all with you and I really do hope you are OK now. Everyone -ette is the mom who is a professional writer who posted to our group awhile ago that she was looking to write an article on apraxia. She helped us put together and write an " Is Your Child A Late Talker " handout which was overseen by Marilyn Agin MD, a Tallal PhD and others -and for those that have seen it you'll see a special thank you to ette at the bottom. The " Is Your Child A Late Talker " handout which I posted part of here will soon be available (Rhonda) as a PDF file to print out! About the article -because I had also been contacted by more than one person at this point who is looking for the story about what we are finding out here I asked ette if she could help me write it because she's an Australian writer who is looking to break into the US market more, knows what we are going through and seeing (even with the ProEFA -ette is the mom who made up her own generic formula by looking at the amounts of DHA, EPA and GLA in ProEFA and going to a Long's Drug Store in California and making it up for her child - she kept a journal about the amazing surges her daughter had/has) Speaking of amazing -ette has an amazing background, very interesting and perhaps she'll share more of it with all of us. She's like a super mom -and now with this too... I'm so happy that you are feeling better now -and if you are really OK, and only then -then yes I would still love your help. Thank you for all you have done so far. ette -The one editor wanted our story in the May 2002 issue of this one magazine, however I know that the article is still wanted so whenever we get the article done -we'll get it out to all that asked for it. Call me or I'll call you! =====

Guest guest
Liz I am so happy every thing is going smoothy so far!! Wish us luck Thursday. I have a feeling it will be much better then last year. Lindsey did the test last year, and the teacher said she bombed. But it didn't make any difference. I know she's developmentally delayed. Sounds like Halley will do fine:)))) Keep us updated! Jennie
Guest guest
--Hi Liz, Oh I am so happy for you and especially for Halley. I am sure it is like having a huge weight lifted. I didn't even know they tested as young as kindergarten. Is this to go to first grade? And how do they deal with special needs children? Well I am glad Halley has adjusted so nicely! Good for you! Guest guest
WOW! That is amazing! I am thrilled for you and Halley. I am new to the group and apraxia, and one of my biggest concerns is whether or not my son will speak in time for Kindergarten. He is now 2-1/2 and I am praying that he makes enough progress in the next 3 years so that he can go to school. Good luck for the rest of the year. Guest guest
Eileen, That is where my concerns lie, what they are going to do with her having apraxia. I have left a message with the principal to schedule an appointment. I want to know how she is going to help Halley pass this, will she allow Halley to sign the word? Will she allow Halley to make an attempt at the sounds? I am not sure, I want her to tell me what the options are. I did not know that the school tested this way. The other subjects are on numbers/letters/colors/shapes/phonological order etc. So if she passes all of that, and can not go on because of her speech, then they hold her back, she then gets to repeat all this again, and what happens if next year she still can not pass due to speech? I do not know....but other than the testing stress, things are really well! (haha) Thanks again! Liz > --Hi Liz, > Oh I am so happy for you and especially for Halley. Go Halley! I hope my 2 1/2 yr old son Ben follows in her footsteps. We recently heard from EI and they still have no one to send to our house for private sessions, but they do have an 8 week group therapy session that begins this Thursday. It runs from 10-11 AM, and they have a speech therapist and a special ed teacher working w/ a group of 5 kids. Hopefully he will get something out of this. I guess if nothing else, it is good practice for when he starts the preschool handicapped program in February. He also has his private session (that we pay for) on Thursday at 8:45 AM. She recommended that I use an electric toothbrush on his gums/tongue every day to make him 'more aware' of them, and he seems to like that. We have ordered the pro-efa and are waiting for it to arrive so we can start him on that. I have really been working w/ him on his vowels and he is slowly improving. Sometimes he can even get a consonant sound in there, either at the beginning or end of the word. Another thing which I love to hear is that recently he has started to use 2 words-- car (caw) and tree (tee)- to tell me if he sees them or wants to go on them, whereas before he'd basically just yell 'Ma!' and point to it. He is also beginning to say " Ma! Heh! (Help!) " if he needs something instead of just yelling or whining. One small step at a time! :-) --Lis, Brittany and (29 mos, apraxic) > > > > >Hi all, I guess it's time for an update on our first week of school. > >Halley has made a beautiful transistion into kindergarten, there > >seems to be no adjustment period this year, which is great! Guest guest
-Hi Liz, THe thing that I would say to the principle is that there is nothing wrong with Halley's receptive/cognitive. She learns just fine that is why she is in a mainstream class, and they should not keep her back for not being able to speak a certain word a certain way. This principle has accepted halley into the class to me I would think it would be against her IEP or even the law to then not let her graduate from kindergarten knowing in advance she has a speech problem. I also read the test in your other post and have never heard of this kind of test, where do they come up with their rules and tests anyway! Halley should not be expected to say a word that is obviously riduculous, that would be like saying to a child who is deaf, " In order for your child to graduate he needs to listen to a story and tell us what it is about! " Not exactly the same thing but pretty close! Good luck with your meeting and let us know how it goes. Guest guest
Hi Kim, I read your post and I just had to comment! My son (apraxia/resovled, mild language/articulation issues) just started Kindergarten last week and he was essentially NON-VERBAL (did not even say mom or mama or much of anything outside of sounds) at the same age your son is. I too felt the same way and thought and prayed that he would be making enough progress to be in a mainstream Kindergarten program! I am hear to tell you there is light at the end of the tunnel and with you as mom and number one avocate, making sure he is getting the support/services he needs he will do just fine! I was just telling my husband today how far DJ has come from that time when I never even heard the word " mama " to now and his teacher telling me tonight at cirrculum night that he is doing " super " and she sees him having no problems learning and if he keeps up the progress in the speech/language, might not even qualify for services next year!! Music to my ears, I almost burst into tears when she told me that!! I owe a lot of what I have learned from all the wonderful people on this board (owners/moderaters/participants) that have enlightened me and given me the courage and encouragement to keep on keepin' on! Sorry for ramblin', I just got all melancholy there for a sec!! > WOW! That is amazing! I am thrilled for you and Halley. Guest guest
Well I am crying-happy at my end of the computer! I am thrilled for your success and feel the way that you originally felt! Yes, there are times that I think my son is non-verbal, because days go by without a word, then suddenly the word " teeth " pops out when he wants to brush his teeth. Or the word, Juice (joo) comes out when he is thirsty. And I look forward to the day that he says Mom/mama. My husband laughs at me, because I have two speaking girls who say MOM every minute (at least it seems that way) and I get so frustrated. He told me that someday, my son will say Mom every minute and I will wish he wont. NOT TRUE! I can't wait. Can you shed some light on what made your efforts with your son so successful? Multiple therapy? Special therapy, such as PROMPT or Kaufman cards? Did you use Pro-EFA? OT? And again, thanks and congrats! Kim cafeolait1 <vware1@... Guest guest
How did you get speech 5 times a week? Is it group/one-on-one? Also, is she being pulled out of kindegarten for speech or do you do it after kindegarten? My girls start kindegarten next week. Guest guest
Kim, Thanks and girlfriend, you are truly welcome! I KNOW how it feels/felt! As far as what has worked with DJ, I would have to say it has been a combination of a few things. ONE being, early intervention, and that means getting him in the program through our school district as soon as he was eligible. We were blessed to have the most AWESOME special programs preschool class/teacher! TWO, private ONE on ONE speech therapy (DJ has no other underlying issues, other than speech/language)Our crappy insurance doesn't cover it, but even if we have to cut certain things out of our budget, he will get this. He is currently getting one on one therapy (absolute scheduling miracle, yipee!) through his public school 2xs/wk, 30 minutes and private, 2xs/wk, 30 minutes. It's pretty intense as when he was in preschool he received ST twice a week but it was in a group with kids who were all on differing levels. I presonally think this wasn't too effective. His private ST's (he's had two) didn't use either " method " persey, probably because his apraxia was not severe, and it did resolve as he got older. THREE:, yes,I believe the ProEFA's have been a factor in his progress as well. He has been taking them since about March last year and currently takes 2 plus 1/2 a ProEPA all together, usually after breakfast. I didnt start 2 ProEFAs until about 7 months ago and the ProEPA about 3 months ago. I never tell anyone (even mr skeptical, my husband) when I change things up so I can get an unbiased opinion on what they (ST's, teachers, hubby)notice/say. So far, it has helped, I believe! Finally, FOUR:, the natural language maturation progress. Some of my son's issues were/are developemental in nature. As he got/gets older, things are resolving, but he still needs the the therapy to get him where he needs to be! Yikes, this is turning into a looong post! Hope that helps and thanks again! Vivian > Well I am crying-happy at my end of the computer! Guest guest
> How did you get speech 5 times a week? Is it group/one-on-one? I got speech 5x a week through the IEP with the last county I lived in. I had an awesome team that worked with me on every issue, and had her best interest at heart. It is a group session. > Also, is she being pulled out of kindegarten for speech or do you do > it after kindegarten? She is pulled out of kindergarten, goes to a speech room for her sessions. It is done by the school therapist. They only wanted to give her 1 hour per week, but then looked at the IEP and saw that it required 5x a week, and changed that. They are scheduling an IEP meeting and may want to change that, but I am not going to allow the changes. > > My girls start kindegarten next week. Guest guest
Great ideas and suggestions. will not be receiving the classroom intervention until next year this time, when he is actually 3-1/2 years old, since he turns 3 in March, and that is in the middle of a school year. I can't wait for this, I hear all the time that it helps to be with other kids. And as I mentioned earlier, we are in the paperwork process of getting him into ST 2x a week and OT 1x a week. He just has speech one time a week for one hour now, but I keep hearing to get him early and often, which is what I am doing. I don't know if this is my imagination or not, but the Pro-EFA may be working already.....OR he is just making progress. Either way, I am thrilled. He is using the words he knows more often and shouted out a few new words this past weekend. Finally, you touched on a thought that I have been wondering for a while. I know that speech does not come to kids naturally, that they have to be taught to speak, etc. But does age play a difference? As gets older, does some speech progress, just coinciding with the age? I guess I am looking for nature to play a positive role in this area. Thanks again. Kim

Guest guest
My son turned 3 on March 17th..we had him evaluated March 25th..he qualified for services ..the school district asked if I wanted to start right away or what till August.. started school on April 19th and went till May 19th when the school year ended..every little bit helps..going that little bit made this year a breeze..yesterday he walked right in and hugged his teacher (he has the same teacher)..we did not qualify for summer services because he was not there long enough..It is my understanding that the school district has to offer services as soon as they turn 3..good luck Re: [ ] Re: Update! Guest guest
not sure she is a genius but maybe more benign than others. You do not need surgery you need iodine and enough of the right thyroid meds. Gracia I went to my doctor appointment and this doctor is a genius. First, she looked at results and said everything looked good and even said that the ft3 and ft4 are in the upper 1/3 range. Then she said either I can wait two months or start on thyroid hormone. I thought what the heck.....I am not in the hyper mode and why not try it. She prescribe me Levothroid(Levothyroxine) .125 mg. I will be taking my first pill tomorrow morning. She says that if I am still like this from 2-3 yrs she would recommend surgery. She said that if I have aaannnyyy problems with this brand that she would be willing to try other brands. Someone answered my prayer/wish/ or whatever. I have caught myself tearing up because I have been struggling for about a year. I just want to feel better and get my life back together.
