Last weekend, I went to a Christmas Party held by my ex-in-laws. Had a truly wonderful time. Bobbie, a registered nurse, and a few of us, started talking about healing. We were talking about breast cancer, and I explained that when Mama had her mystectomy, I practiced Reiki on her. Bobbie asked if that was like healing touch. Now, I think with healing touch, a person could be adding Reiki, even without knowing it, but Reiki is energy. So, I asked Alice to hold out her left hand, and held my hands above her hand. Alice immediately commented on the heat she felt! So, I sent a little more, and she was surprised! Shocked you might say, as she said I shocked her. I hadn't, but what she felt was the energy moving down her hand into her arm. Reiki works! Love, Joy

Reiki: An Alternatitve Therapy [ 2007-12-19 ]

Uttam MaharjanReiki is a spiritual practice for the treatment of physical, emotional and mental ailments. It was discovered by Mikao Usui, a Japanese spiritual healer, in the early 20th century (April 1922). He received the ability to heal ailments after three weeks of fasting, meditation and prayer on Mount Koruma. EnergyThe healing technique used in Reiki is based on the flow of energy from the palms of its practitioners towards its recipients (patients). Reiki can also be used for self-treatment. That is why, Reiki practitioners can use this method to treat themselves by using Reiki energy on themselves. The word 'Reiki' is derived from two words: rei and ki. Rei means unseen or spiritual, and ki energy or life force. Thus, Reiki would literally denote spiritual energy. Reiki is a form of energy healing and based on a universal life force energy, which can be tapped to cure ailments as such a force or energy is full of healing effects. The application of this energy is believed to beef up the recipient's energy system (called aura). This force or energy cannot, however, be accessed by people other than Reiki practitioners. Reiki refers to energy and not the specific techniques used by Reiki masters. The techniques are known as the Usui system of natural healing.Reiki practitioners believe that Reiki can heal everything as it works at very fundamental levels of reality. But there are certain limitations, the most important being the recipient's willingness to accept the Reiki system with full faith in it. In the medical field, healing would generally refer to the curing of symptoms, whereas in Reiki and other allied practices, healing would refer to steering clear of deviations from the ideal form. The ideal form is the one in which people are perfect in terms of physical and emotional health. In other words, bridging the gap between the present and ideal forms is what healing is all about in Reiki.Reiki can be used not only on people present beside Reiki practitioners but also on those who are away from them. That is to say, Reiki can be used from a distance. In this case, special symbols are used to make a connection between a Reiki practitioner and his/her patient. Further, Reiki energy can be sent to a specific point of time either in the past or in the future. Reiki energy is believed to come from the universe and to be a widow's cruse. Reiki can be used as a preventative medicine as it is believed to encourage healing before a disease sets in. It can be taught to children as well. If the recipient does not want to be cured of his disease through Reiki, energy will not flow from a Reiki practitioner and no healing effects will emerge. Reiki can be used as a holistic therapy, localised treatment, informal treatment, self-treatment, group treatment and even spiritual practice.Under the holistic (whole-body) method, the practitioner places his/her hands on the recipient in various positions. Some practitioners may, however, keep their hands a few centimetres away from the recipient's body for some or all of the positions. The hands are usually kept still on the target for 3-5 minutes. This method uses 12-20 positions, and one session lasts 45-90 minutesUnder localised treatment, the practitioner keeps his/her hands on or near a specific part of the body which needs treatment. Fresh injuries are usually treated in this way. There is a great variation in the duration of the treatment. However, 20 minutes might be typical.Under informal treatment, Reiki may be used as part of social interaction with friends or family members. The practitioner puts his/her hands on any part of the recipient. While under this type of therapy, social interaction may be continuing as in a normal condition.Under self-treatment, a Reiki practitioner can treat himself/herself. In this case, the practitioner and the recipient will be the same person.Under group treatment, two or more Reiki practitioners synergistically and simultaneously treat the same recipient. Group Reiki is said to be more effective than Reiki from a single practitioner. In other words, the laws of synergy are said to hold water in this case.Under spiritual practice, Reiki practitioners engage in self-treatment for one hour a day. It helps maintain physical, mental and emotional well-being. Furthermore, it promotes spiritual growth, thus leading to self-realisation.Usui was an admirer of Emperor Meiji. He collected some of the Emperor's works into a compendium of ethical principles. These principles are now known as the Reiki principles. Reiki practitioners are required to have knowledge of these rules.Four years after the discovery of Reiki, i.e., in 1926, Usui passed away. But during the four-year period, he taught Reiki to 2,000 people, of whom 16 people were able to attain the Shinpiden level (Master level).Reiki is criticised in the scientific field. Critics argue that Reiki has no scientific legs to stand on. Its effect is merely due to what may be termed as the placebo effect. Other factors responsible for attracting people to Reiki are post-hoc reasoning and regressive fallacy. Reiki is alleged to be a feel-good therapy; recipients do not expect any major healing effects. There are some apprehensions in the allopathic circle, so people may be increasingly attracted to alternative therapies like Reiki and Jyorei in the course of curing themselves of serious diseases. However, some Reiki practitioners suggest that allopathic treatment should be resorted to for the treatment of serious diseases. Reiki may be effective for minor ailments.Side effectsThere is no harm or side effects arising from Reiki therapy. What is important is self-belief. If one is convinced that a certain way of treatment can cure one's diseases, one can get well soon. Just depending upon a therapy, be it allopathic, homeopathic or non-drug (spiritual) like Reiki or Jyorei, does not work miracles. Therefore, those who have great belief in Reiki can take great benefits from this drugless therapy as it does not have any side effects on the patient and is relatively cost-effective.
