There was a study by LeJeune (the guy who identified that DS is actually Trisomy 21) just before he died that suggested a possible genetic basis for this. He found that DS kids had 50% more of certain amino acids (due to the excess expression relating to the extra 21st chromosome). In his publication on his study he pointed out that vitamins act as catalysts in reactions in the body and too much of a catalyst would not be good when there was too much of the amino acid present. His study suggest that mega-vitamin therapy is actually harmful to people with DS - and that a craving for starches and proteins (vs vitamin laden fruits and veggies) might be related to the body's natural desire to avoid getting too much of a good thing. An interesting theory....... - Becky

Guest guest
I did always think of amanda as the queen of chips- but give her a piece of chocolate.... ya know something interesting- even though she has celiac disease with an allergy to wheat and gluten, she never ate bread or pizza in her whole life. I find that quite interesting.

Guest guest
Hi, My son has never sucked on candy. Does not eat much ice cream and prefers a good yogurt to anything else. He loves fries. Would eat mashed potatoes all day everyday. I cannot say he is salty or sweet. Jean

Guest guest
Karrie's favorite foods are Mc's fries and Pringles Sour Cream and Onion chips. Rarely, if ever, touches sweet things, unless it's soda, or juice. Doesn't even like ice cream anymore. She actually will only eat a very limited amount to foods. I'm trying a new program with her called Food Chaining. Anyone else heard of/used this? Sue mom to Kate 15 and Karrie 8 w/ds and other issues .. Guest guest
We have just come back from the supermarket with a bag of Trent's shopping - full of sweet things - he seems to love buying chocolate frogs and other lollies but seldom eats them. Like the others he enjoys more - twisties and chips. Ice-cream and desserts are picked at give him a tomato sauce (ketchup) sandwich and he is very happy. Watermelon and oranges are probably he most favourite of fruits. He has been brainwashed into drinking Coke - again always into buying, then because we have it we all have to have a drink - no keeping any for later - but happily drinks juices. Keep smiling Jan, mother of Trent 20yo w/DS - from the LandDownUnder
