Guest guest
Dear FORUM, Re: The blood bank scandal in Mumbai. Dear Dr. Gilada, I just read your post on the AIDS-India e FORUM. My heart just breaks that these practices are still continuing across the globe. It's all about the money. Blood is big business and too often, greed overules care about outcomes. I have been in THIS fight for two decades, with a dead son, dead brother and more friends than I could list lost to HIV infected blood and blood products. It is not only the collection agencies at fault, but the donor population as well: those who believe that HIV isn't about them and go donate. It is a shameful situation. For many, a start would be a better understanding of the " business of blood " . The is an excellent book I would like to recommend: " Blood: An Epic History of Commerce and Medicine " by Dougals Starr. It is VERY insightful about the business and practices of the multi-national blood collection/fractionation industry. Awareness is a begining to start to fix the problems and your letter will help start that process. Thank you for sharing this across the many miles.
