Because your palm is your palm and a palm + fingers = a whole hand.

Thats the way I interprete it anyways. Plus, wouldn't a whole hand

of chicken be a hell of a lot of chicken?

I really don't think using your fingers is going to throw you off,

however, I do think Bill's intent was NOT to use them. Atleast,

that's what I got from the book. But, HEY...a little more protein

never killed anybody....

Did it?

I don't know. I think that everyone should do what is comfortable

and what works for them. Personally, a whole hand would be way too

much. My hand is 6.5 " in length and almost 3 " across. But my palm

is 3.5 " in length. That 2 " is a 57% increase in surface area. And

as it is now, I am having a hard time eating my 6 servings of palm

sized protein. I did the first 2 days and was all bloated and really

full. Today I used 3/4 of my palm and I feel much better. But maybe

I have monsterous hands or something. Who knows. Everyone should

just do what feels right.

Re: BFL Meals- 40-40-20

I am getting a whiff of the calorie thing all over again........ (or

mayeb the glycemic/schmycemic thing)

Folks - this is about making choices and controlling what you eat and

how much. AGain - getting caught up in the details. Nickel and

diming a million dollar solution.

I have alwys taken the palm/fist to mean the following:

If a food can lay flat (like a piece of chicken or fish) then you use

the approximate size of your palm. (and, honestly, if you have a

little more salmon, it is NOT going to be the end of the world.

If a pliable or piles up - such as rice, cottage cheese, pasta, use

an amount the approximate size of your fist.

I really dont; stress this stuff too much.

Again - if I am unsure - I strive to get the same amoutn of protein

anywhere between a myo lite and a regualr myo (25 - 40 g) depening on

how I am feeling. If you are having trouble with this, You can use

something like fitday.com to give you an idea of how many ounces of

chicken breat give you this much protein. BUT - you will NEVER cath

me slicing off 1 1 " strip of the chicken breast to make it exacly

35.8 g of protein. I will eat the whole chicken breast.

Again - BFL is about making good choices and progress, not absolute

scientific perfection.

I think part of the problem, for me anyway, is that for " years " we

have been told " eat this much " , weigh, measure and calculate and it's

scary to let go of that and embrace a new theory. A few years ago I

had a Dobe with lots of health problems and he didn't tolerate

regular dog food very well. So I finally switched him to a raw diet

and one of the hardest things was that there was no " weighing,

measuring, etc. " ; no guidelines; no starting point like 3 cups/day,

etc. Within a few months, it was easy and a " no brainer " but I

remember the first few months still wanting to know how to

measure/weigh to give him the right amounts.

IMAO, I was under the impression that portions should be about 20-25

grams of protein a meal. Is this right? That's how I was measuring

most of my food.

So, when I eat cottage cheese, that would be a cup.

Or should I rely on my palm instead?? I've often felt full after

eating the cottage cheese.

Did I mention I had peanut brittle on my vacation? I certainly ate

more than a palm portion of it!!! (Hmm, I wonder what the protein

content in peanut brittle is...)

I also added my 8 week pictures to my briefcase...don't have

my 'before' yet on the computer. Don't mind also that this was taken

first thing in the AM since DH wanted to hurry and take

it 'natural'. This is about as natural as you can get!!!

because fingers are fingers a palm is the front portion of a hand

minus fingers and thumb.

According the the Websters dictionary [just so happen to have one

here due to all the kids I have and them needing it to due their

school work with, hee hee]the definition of the palm in regaurds to a

human hand is~

" the somewhat concave part of the human hand between the bases of the

fingers and the wrist "

So fingers are not included in terms of the palm measurements and the

water displacement thing would not work with the palm portions.

Alot of us use the measuring cups and spoons to figure out our

portions. But it is suggested that for the first challenge that a

person uses the fist/ palm method [book to a T sort of thing] so it's

not over load on information due to counting cals trying to figure

out how much you should realy eat etc...but if a person already has

this knowledge than I think it's up to the person to decide what will

work best for them.

I only did the fist/ palm thing for my first challenge then switched

to counting because the fist/ palm thing wasn't working for me

anymore [i started out at a low body weight and an average BF%]so the

palm thing just had me maintaing my current fittness levels.

Astra~

LOL!

Well if I was to use my whole hand [fingers and palms]that would be

the size of a large chicken breast which is about 6oz. And my true

portion size is 1/2 of that about 3oz. :0) so in my case that is

doubling up on my protein.

For all that I have read...I guess I will use my palm. My hubby was

laughing when I told him that coz I have small hands...I guess I will

know if its sufficient coz my body will cry for hunger if its too

little.

Gee, my book is not here yet...but, I will go ahead on Monday.

Will keep you all updated.

Thanks again & cheers,

Geri
