In a sense you are part of the group that is leading the way for the

understanding of Sprycel. A rough sum of the clinical trial results

has over a 1000 people having taken Sprycel. Most of the people in

Chronic phase are still on the drug after about an average of 18

months. There have been some surprises such as that many patients are

responding to doses that are much lower than the best lab studies would

have predicted.

In some ways Sprycel is like Gleevec in terms of the kinases (enzymes)

that they inhibit. The experience so far with Gleevec (6+ years) has

been that this has not caused any major long term effects on the

patient so this is of little relative concern with Sprycel. However,

Sprycel differs from Gleevec in that it also inhibits the activity of a

family of kinases termed SRC (pronounced SARK). What the long term

effects of this is unknown. In terms of cancer, the SRC kinases seem

to be important in the growth and ability to metastasize of quite a few

cancers so Sprycel will be studied in those settings also.

I was on Sprycel for three years and did great---then got some bad
