Guest guest
Hi , I don't have those answers, but I will try and find them. What is most astonishing to me is the incidence of CML and AML in the normal population. It is about 1 or 2 per 100,000. Having 4 in the same building is suspicious. Guest guest
Thank you Zavie. Appreciate your help. All what I want to do is to aware other employees if they experience any symptoms related to Leukemia to check it out. I am so disturbed about the news of the new AML's patient who did not get right attention and discover her disease late. She is now in the hospital for intense chemotherapy treatment. She is 46 years old and have young kids. Please pray for her. --------- [ ] CML statistics Hi everyone I have a rare situation happening in my office. Guest guest
hi well, you know that i dont live in Tallahassee, rather i do live in Israel, but i did live there for 3 years 1974-1977 when i went to fsu. i dont think this has anything to do with my cml which was diagnosed some 23 years latter. also i remember the city as not too big, not industrial, lots of parks and green and i realy cant see any reason why it should have more leukemia patients than other places. i will probably be in atlanta this december, and i will try to visit my old school, so maybe we will get to meet after i missed you on your short visit to israel last year. best regards giora [ ] CML statistics Hi everyone I have a rare situation happening in my office. Guest guest
Hello , I was reading your interesting post about the incidences of Leukemia in Florida and in your office particularly. I work in a high rise building and I thought that " sick building syndrome " can contribute to some of these things. However, I have learned from attending many CML Society of Canada events that these types of leukemias often strike in middle age. So, I was thinking that since the population of Florida is older, then it would make sense that the incidence rate of leukemia would be higher in Florida because that is where so many people retire to. So, what is the average age group of the people developing cancer at your place of work? Additionally, reading the CML Society of Canada website at www.cmlsociety.org you can see that the incidence of CML is about 1 in every 100,000 individuals. So, states with higher populations would have a higher concentration of CML. How close are you to Clearwater Florida. I am planning to visit one of my best friends there in the next while, it would be nice to maybe meet you. Hope this helps. Much Love, Rita > > Thank you Zavie. Appreciate your help. Guest guest
Hi (and others posting about Florida cancer rates), I did live in Tallahassee a couple years before my diagnosis but I don't think it likely that had anything to do with my cml. The CDC keeps extensive records on the incidence of all cancers and it looks like Florida is actually a state with a bit lower incidence than the average. Check out this website http://apps.nccd.cdc.gov/uscs/ You can drill down by state and cancer. Florida has an incidence of overall cancers and leukemia a bit lower than the national average. By state it's actually 34th in the rate of incidence so that's pretty good. In order to really understand whether your workplace has an abnormally high incidence of cancer you would need someone with a knowledge of statistics and incidence rates to do an evaluation. There are clusters of cancer just like there are clusters of people with the same birthdays in a room--our intuition isn't really good at helping us understand this--but it is entirely normal. With birthdays it's called the birthday paradox--if you have a room with 23 people there is a better than 50% chance that 2 will have the same birthday. We don't expect to find that--but it is the case. In the same way it wouldn't take anywhere near having a roomful of 100,000 people to find a case of cml even if the incidence is 1 in 100,000 per year. BTW, I love Tallahassee and loved living there. I think it's so beautiful. Best wishes, Dorothy dx 5/2000 Denver, NC On Jul 25, 2007, at 3:14 PM, mtadros9@... wrote: > Thanks for replying. Destin is about 3 hours away from us. Guest guest
If you are looking for statistics on CML in your area, you could contact the local health department or someone in your state's agency. Statistics are kept on all new cancers. Interestingly, we also lived on the Gulf coast for four years on Tyndall AFB in Panama City. There was a big paper factory there. The odors were atrocious.
