Guest guest
Hi I have been on disability for about 1 1/2 years now due to my CML. I did not have a problem getting disability-but apparently is depends some on where you live. All the best. > > Dear Group, > > I was approved for disablilty last year. It was not a long process for me but I have heard this was an exception. I was approved because of CML and liver function failure due to Gleevec (function has returned and I am now on Sprycel and doing well. The interview was done over the phone and the Doctor had to send in a report. It took a couple months and then I was approved on the first try. I have heard you may have to apply several times. I understand I will probably have to be reviewed in the future. I hope they don't take it away from me because I am feeling much better. Maybe they approved it becauce I am 61 and close to getting SS. > Any other questions don't hesitate to ask. > carolyn_kuptz@... > > > > ______________________________________________________________________ ______________ > Need a vacation? Guest guest
It took me about 3 years to get SS disability. I had a desk job, but due to fatigue, bone pain, and my loss of concentration ability I was unable to function as a credit card fraud investigator, and honestly cannot stand for long periods of time. I use to be a vocalist and played rock music but I really do not even have the energy level for that. Allsup Inc. was hired by Aetna to get disabiltiy for me(They did not want to have to pay the full amount they were contracted to pay me until 2031) and what they explained to me is that the first atempts go across peoples desk that are basically paper pushers and when they see " remission " they dismiss the claim without bothering to look at the fact I can't work due to side effects of the medication that keeps me alive. But once it went before a judge he signed off on it and I am to be reviewed in a year. I am not concerned because my condition has not worsened or improved since 04 and so I do not see how things will change(unless I win the lottery..lol) Trust me when I say I would much rather be able to work. I was making twice as much money, and loved my job. On the subject of the person that is doing all this training to climb a mountain...becareful if they catch you doing something like that they will yank your disability faster than congressman can change his mind on an issue..lol. Guest guest
Oh I also forgot to mention the $27,000 I received from SS as back pay...Aetna took all of it but $300 because of the fact they were paying me Long term disability because it was a benefit from my former job. And in their agreement they only have to make partial payments if I have other income. So they took the money since if SS would have been paying me what they do now they would have not had to make the full payments. So now I get my SS check and a partial check from Aetna to make the amount each month that Aetna was contracted to pay me. So it sucked big time to not get that back money because I really wanted to purchase a home. Terry On 7/8/07, Terry Dailey <terrydailey@...> wrote: > > It took me about 3 years to get SS disability. Guest guest
Hey: If what Zavie says is true, and I believe him, all I can say is shame on you. So many on this site are unable to get the financial assistance they need and don't have the physical capabilities to go out and work. We are all dealing with physical limitations due to this disease. Apparently, some less than others. I just got approved for SS Disability with my first application but with recovery from a BMT I have been told I won't go back to work for at least a year. The recovery is going ok, it is just a long, long process. I am almost 5 months post transplant. It is six months to the date of the disability before I will see a check, so around September. I also love my job and look forward to the day I will go back healthy. How is it you can afford to go to Mt.Kilimanjaro being on SS Disability? I can't pay my bills with what they are going to give me. I don't like people that take advantage of the system. It makes it hard on the rest of the honest population. Guest guest
Hey Terry: Are you on SSI or Social Security Disability? I haven't heard of any type of a retro check back to my disability date. It would sure help me right now to financially get through this. I didn't qualify for my company disability due to a pre-existing condition clause. Thanks Therese Terry Dailey <terrydailey@...> wrote: Oh I also forgot to mention the $27,000 I received from SS as back pay...Aetna took all of it but $300 because of the fact they were paying me Long term disability because it was a benefit from my former job. Guest guest
Therese, I am on Social Security Disability. I got retro pay back to Dec of 05. Like I said Aetna took it but I do understand their reasoning, even though I do not like it..lol. If I am wrong someone please correct me, but in my case I had a six month waiting period and at least one unsuccessful attempt to go back to work.(I am not sure if that is mandatory or not) As I mentioned it is sad but a fact it might take a while to get SSD because if your in remission the people looking at your claim at first see " remission " and do not take anything else into account and move it along the appeal process. In my case it was at the hearing stage but the judge signed off on it without me having to go to court. Hope this info helps if you need more feel free to contact me via email as well as within the group:) Terry On 7/8/07, Therese Stone <kidme2003@...> wrote: > > Hey Terry: > > Are you on SSI or Social Security Disability? Guest guest
Hey Terry: I have been approved for Social Security Disability. I was told at the hospital by the staff that helped me that it is all in how you word your application. That is what the attorneys are getting the big money for doing the reapplication process for those who are turned down. Social Security is a Federal program isn't it? I am going to go read the info I got from them. It would be nice to see a check dated back to when I had to go out of work. Thanks for the info. Take care. Guest guest
Therese, Your absolutely right it is a federal program and in fact everyone that works and is not paid under the table pays into it, so for those of us that need it, we should be able to get it. Your also right about it is how things are worded. You should receive retro pay, as I said in my case they went back to Dec of 05. But I only saw $300 of it. It was cool having 27 grand in my account for one day though..rotfl Terry On 7/8/07, Therese Stone <kidme2003@...> wrote: > > Hey Terry: > > I have been approved for Social Security Disability. Guest guest
Zavie: I do not need to explain to you or anyone else why I am on disability as it is between me, my doctor and disability. The fact that I am training to climb mount kilimanjaro -for the CML Society- and I am on disability is also none of your concern Zavie. You do not know the type of work that I do, or my situation. Once again, as in the past Zavie, you speak about others without thought for them or what others may think when reading your posts. This post was not directed to you, it was to the person inquiring about SSI/Disability. I do not ask the personal issues of people that have CML and how their CML manifests unless they want to offer that information. I suggest you do the same and mind your own CML not mine. > > > > Dear Group, > > > > I was approved for disablilty last year. Guest guest
Theresa Unfortunately once again this is a case of someone speaking aboutsomething they know nothing about. My trip is being funded through family and friends-this is a trip to raise awareness for CML. My being on disability has nothing to do with this, and unfortunately as in the past this person just wants to cause trouble for others. Sorry you have been misinformed. I have not taken advantage of the system, whether you believe th at or not.[ > > > > Dear Group, > > > > I was approved for disablilty last year. Guest guest
Terry: Yeah, I would love to see that figure in my bank account right now! Hang in there. I started to panic, a couple of months ago when I realized I was taking the year off to do this BMT with no income. A good friend of mine told me that it would be ok and things would work out. She was right. I have had doors open and angels fly in. As hard as this has been, I feel like I am getting my life back. I spent too many years suffering from the effects of Gleevec and Sprycel used to treat my CML. I hope I chose the right path. Only time will tell. So far, no regrets. You have my best wishes and prayers. Guest guest
Hello! I am more of a lurker on here but have a SSD question.. I am on to transplant at the end of this month, and have been hassling with disability since last october.. Well i talked to my case worker today, and she said that she had a made a decision but had sent it off to make sure she had made the right one (she wouldn't tell me what was decided)... Well anyways i got a check in the mail from them today, but have yet to recieve an approval letter.. Has any one had this happen to them?? I'm holding on to the check until i know for sure what is going on! Thanks in advance! gill > > > > sassysus06 <no_reply > > wrote: > > Hi > > > > I have been on disability for about 1 1/2 years now due to my > CML. Guest guest
I think it is very unfortunate when people make maligning remarks in regard to a situation they know nothing about. It is even more unfortunate when they convince others to have the same mind set. As was mentioned in previous posts, none of us know all the circumstances of anothers life and it is not fair to pass judgement. I think we have enough to worry about with a CML diagnosis and all that it brings without worrying about if someone else is getting or doing something we are not. Let's be positive and support each other in all our endeavours. Guest guest
I usually look forward to this group to get solid information about CML and it's treatment. Lately it's become a chat line. I'm not interested in reading personal opinions or maligning remarks about others. What is the purpose of the group? Since we are all coping with the same disease, don't we need more serious deliberation about our health and wellness? Not interested in bickering, Margaret coralee.williams@... wrote: I think it is very unfortunate when people make maligning remarks in regard to a situation they know nothing about. Guest guest
Gill: I got someone elses Social Security letter in my mail last week. Unfortunately it wasn't yours! I sent it back to the Social Security Office. You can call the main number for Social Security and they should be able to confirm your status. The letter was probably sent elsewhere like the one I received. I am curious about your BMT. I am 150 days post transplant. I went to transplant because Gleevec and Sprycel were no longer working to stop the CML. Do you have a unrelated or related donor? I hope for the best for you. The process is long so hang in there and know that your not alone. Therese Gilfish_15 <gilfish_15@...> wrote: Hello! I am more of a lurker on here but have a SSD question.. Guest guest
Gill, It is very possible as Therese said they screwed up.(Imagine our goverment doing that??? rotfl) When I started the process the company that was helping me get SSD had me give them a vioded check so my SSD payments would be direct deposit, well I got my letter saying I should have had my payment two days before I got the letter and after checking it turned out someone at Social Security had left off a number on my account number..lol. So after calling SS I sure enough they had the money returned to them from my bank and were setting on it. So after I explained to them they had left a number off of my account number two days later it was in my account, and then the next day it was gone to repay Aetna. So I would do what Therese says and give them a call. Also I am curious why you went for the BMT? Were you resistant to the drugs available for treatment? I know my docs have ruled out a BMT for me because the Gleevec is working great for me(aside for the side effects) and because of the risk involved. Due to my age I have about a 50% survival rate, according to my docs. Anyway good luck with your SSD but to me it sounds like you got it:) On the subject of Zavie's post, I must admit I was taken aback a bit at first by your post ne but then I realized if you looked at me and did not know I had CML you would not think I was ill. I mean I am a bit pale and have dark circles under my eyes, but of course my having long black hair I am sure doesn't help..lol. What I am saying is I understand why it might have triggered a response like the one posted by Zavie, but at the same time I agree it is none of our business why people are getting what we get or what we don't. Yes, there is a person I know of that was granted SSD who never really worked a full week in his life and is just a total drug addict. I know that is not your case ne, so please do not think I am putting you in with the scumbags that play the system. If your like me you were making allot more money working...lol. In fact I think it is cool your doing something to bring awareness and help the CML society. But let's not be to hard on Zavie over his post. Let's just drop it and get back to why we are all here.(or at least why I rejoined) And that is to help each other and those new to our disease that are scared to death and need someone to talk to and get information from. Guest guest
I receive disability through CPP in Canada(government-it comes off my pension). Guest guest
ne, I ask because SSI/Disablity is hard for most folks to get. It has very strict financial guidelines to follow (low income) and the disabled person is under constant scrutiny to see that he or she does not have too much money. You are fortunate CPP allows for foreign travel and to be employed. The SSA/Disability program does allow a person to work limited hours and still collect disability in certain cases. SSA/Disability is not easy to qualify for most people and is meant for those who are genuinely unable to work. I think it unwise to tell people how easy it was for you to qualify and then tell them you are going mountain climbing. This may be ok for your system but it is not for ours. In the future you should let people know you are on the Canadian system as things seem to be quite different there. > > > > > > > > > > Dear Group, > > > > > > > > > > I was approved for disablilty last year. Guest guest
: While I do not feel the need to explain myself to you or anyone else I do feel the need to clarify things so that people do not get the wrong idea about me, which is unfortunate that some have made me feel that I need to do this. Firstly, I am aware that CPP and SSI/Disability are different-we are in different countries, and I have no control over the strictness of their policies. I do not make the policy, I am only following what I am allowed to do. You seem to be under the impression that I am collecting something to which I am not entitled to. This money is coming from my pension-it is something I have paid into for many years, and will be reduced when and if I reach the age to collect it. I am on long-term disability from my work which is why I can collect this-it is to substidize the long-term disability payments. I did not say that I had an easy time qualifying and then go on to say I am climbing a mountain. In fact I in no time have ever offered the fact that I am climbing Mount Kili. Zavie felt the need to mention that, after he found out that information while in Germany at a CML meeting, and for some reason felt the need to share that on here. Maybe you should ask Zavie how the Zero Club was reacted to at the meeting-I am sure he would love for that information to be on this site. Yes, I did say that I did not have a hard time qualifying, but as I mentioned, it depends on where you live. I was not making light of those that have had to struggle to get assistance that they need, only trying to say that it is possible in some instances. Unfortunately I cannot change the US way of SSI/disability. I am hoping like others that I will be able to return to work at some point. It is sad that one has to justify everything that is said on this site, and that one person's comments can cause so much hurt and frustration. > > > > > > > > > > > > Dear Group, > > > > > > > > > > > > I was approved for disablilty last year. Guest guest
ne, The point I was trying to make; why make a statement of the ease in obtaining disability when it has nothing to do with the problems the person you responded to had. I am not interested in how or why you are disabled and you have nothing to prove to me. I also belong to most of the CML groups and have read on CML Society site about you and the climb. There is also information in your bio as of a member of the Board that you are currently employed. I now understand, after your explanation that it is ok in CPP system. You mention something about a CML meeting in Germany. Is this the Novartis sponsored meeting? I assume you went, as you mention something about the Zero Club. The way you word it, there seems to be something negative was said. Since you brought this up, would you like to share it with the rest of us? On a positive note, I hope the Expedtion goes well, everyone is safe and you raise lots of awareness for the CML Society. > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Dear Group, > > > > > > > > > > > > > > I was approved for disablilty last year.
