Tracey:

I have had continual changes in my vision the last two years and I have been

going to the optometrist every 6 months. Because of the pressure issue, I

make

sure they check it each time and my pressure has not been an issue.

However, you have been on Gleevec much longer than I have.

Matt

Hi Everyone,

Some time ago I posted an abstract that showed the various side effects

that Gleevec could cause on the eyes and an increase in intraocular

pressure was one of them.

Well I finally got around to getting my eyes tested and sure enough, my

pressure was quite high. Now I'm curious to know if anyone else has

kept on " eye " on their eye pressure.

Unfortunately, I can't say for sure that the Gleevec is at the root of

my eye pressure because I don't think I ever had it tested prior to

starting Gleevec over 5 years ago. If I did, it would have been with a

different eye doctor, in a different province so it wouldn't be that

easy for me to check anyway. It is possible that I've always been that

way I guess.

Hi ,

I started on Gleevec in Dec of 2005 and in Oct 2006 I started noticing some

blurred vision. I went to my ophthalmologist and I was diagnosed with pseudo

tumor cerbri which in laymen' s terms is elevated spinal fluid pressure. This

pressure was causing my optic nerves to swell causing my blurred vision. My onc.

took me off Gleevec and the pressure came back down. I was started on Sprycel in

Dec of 2007 and in May my elevated pressure is back. I have had two spinal taps

that showed the elevated pressure. Right now I am off the Sprycel on a " drug

holiday " and I have another appointment with my ophthalmologist on July 20th to

see what the progress is. My dilemma is if Gleevec and Sprycel both are causing

my elevated spinal pressure I think I am running out of options.

I hope this information helps you,

Chuck

Hi Chuck,

I'm sorry to hear that Gleevec and Sprycel are causing your spinal

fluid pressure to increase. Please don't worry that you're running

out of options though. Nilotinib (AMN-107) should be approved

shortly and so far it seems that this drug isn't having the same

problems with fluid retention and edema that Gleevec and Sprycel

have. There are also a myriad of other drugs in various trials

around the US so there are still a number of options out there,

should you need more choices.

So far, my increase in intraocular pressure isn't serious enough to

warrant a change in treatment but it's something my optometrist wants

to keep a close " eye " on. It seems to be stable though so that's

reassuring and thankfully, my actual vision hasn't been impacted.

All the best to you,

Tracey

Hi ,

It's funny you should say this because I too used to have terribly

dry eyes (before Gleevec). I still have an occasional day here or

there where my eyes are dry (mostly in the winter when it's drier)

but for the most part, Gleevec has fixed my dry eye problem.

Sometimes they tear so much it looks like I'm crying.

Hi Chuck, Tracey, and ,

I have had different reactions with my eyes since beginning treatment on

400mg's of Gleevec in April of 04. When I first started taking it my eyes

would swell nearly shut(looked like I had gotten out of the ring with Mike

Tyson..lol) that gradually went away and once in a while they get puffy but

that goes away as the day goes on. I wear contact lenses and have had

dryness as well as the tearing up thing happen. I was wondering though Chuck

what dosage level did they have you on when taking Gleevec? If it was over

400mg's you might want to just lower the dosage and see if they helps. I

know many are jumping off the Gleevec bandwagon for these new drug coming

out but from my understanding these drugs were suppose to be for people to

take if they could not handle Gleevec or it stopped working? Anyway good

luck and keep us posted on how your doing.
