Guest guest
Hi Efrem, This is news to me. This is the first time that I heard anyone say that they can miss a dose one day a week. Also, how low were your platelets and neutrophils? I don't know of any CML patients that take Gleevec only 6 days a week. I would like to see the study that this is based on. Therefore, she instructed me to take the Gleevec (440 mg) six days a week instead of seven. She told me not to worry as many people have reached remission and stayed in remission taking Gleevec six days a week instead of seven. If any one has any insight into this, please let me know. Guest guest
Hi Efrem, Your counts are not at the point where you need to consider a Gleevec break. As Zavie has mentioned, none of the experts would recommend taking Gleevec just 6 days a week. When you start to skip doses, you risk developing resistance. If a patient's counts drop too low, experts will recommend that you either stop taking Gleevec for a period of time (usually until your counts rebound) or you take Neupogen (another drug that boosts neutrophils). In the early days, Novartis used to recommend that a patient stop taking Gleevec (for a period of time) if their platelets went below 50 and/or their neutrophils dropped below 1000 but now many patients continue to take the drug even if their counts are lower than this. I suggest that you get another opinion from someone who is more familiar with Gleevec before you start to skipping doses. Take care, Tracey Hi Efrem, > > This is news to me. Guest guest
Hi, Efram I have never heard of or know anyone else that skipped a day a week taking Gleevec. The vacations I know about are taken with very careful consideration. My ONC consults with Dr. K at the University of Michigan I was on 400mg Gleevec from March 2003 until May 2007, Last October I started having low RBC readings and in Dec. 2006 after much testing, receive transfusions about every 3 weeks thru May 2007. I was tested and retested for various causes and they all came back negative. My bone marrow biospy in Nov. showed 0 Phillies and the Q-PCR showed .001. In May, the Q-PCR still showed .001 and My ONC and I agreed to a vacation so that I would not become resistant to a low dosage of Gleevec. I retested Q-PCR in Aug. and the count remained .001. I have started to regenerated red blood cells and am approching the normal range. I will go back in Nov. for another Q- PCR and it will be decided if I remain on vacation. While I am thankful for Gleevec, it is wonderful to know that I have all my RX options open when it becomes necessary for me to resume treatment. I am unable express to you how great it is to not have any side effects for now. H. dxd 2/03 Gleevec 400mg 3/03 PCRU 11/03 Q-PCR .012 11/04 Q-PCR .000 11/05 Q-PCR .001 11/06 - In , fischer <efrem_fischer@...> wrote: > > At my last appointment, the doctor became concerned that the Gleevec was pushing my Platelet count and Neutrophil count down to low. Guest guest
Hi , It's great that your PCR has remained low while you've had your break. Is there a reason why you've gone the transfusion route instead of the Procrit route?
