Guest guest
Hello to everyone, I have written on this post infrequently since my husband was diagnosed in July 2006. Whenever I had a problem or concern there was always someone who would reply to give advice or hope. It has been a long, long year but I am happy to report that on October 4, 2007 my husbands PCR results came back at .001!!!!!!!! Our oncologist said we have received a 3 log reduction. Magic Words!!!! We are so happy for the discovery of Gleevec. To anyone recently diagnosed: My husband lives a full active wonderful life. No restrictions. He is actually healthier now than ever before. Other than taking 400 mg of Gleevec 2 times a day you would NEVER know he has CML. Zavie....does this make my husband a member of the Zero Club?? Thanks to everyone, Good luck. I will continue to read these posts and will pray that everyone reaches this magic goal. Debbie

Guest guest
Hi Margaret, A log reduction has nothing to do with CML. It is a mathematical notation. It means 10 times. A one log reduction means 10 times less, and a 1 log increase means 10 times more. A 2 log reduction means 100 times less, and a 2 log increase means 100 times more. A 3 log reduction means 1000 times less and a 3 log increase means 1000 times more. So, when you use the log reduction in CML speak, you are comparing your current CML status to a previous one. The reason they concentrate on a 3 log reduction is because once you reach this level of response (the detectable CML level in your system is 1000 times less than when you were first diagnosed with CML) it means that there is virtually no chance that you ill ever relapse with your CML. A very good place to be. Another term that is closely associated with a 3 log reduction is PCRU. This means that they could not find any CML in your system using a PCR test. The U in PCRU means undetectable. In terms of log reduction it means that you are at a 5 log reduction or 100,000 times less CML in your system than when you ere diagnosed. If you look at my signature you can see that I am doing really well with my CML. It has taken me 5 years on Gleevec to reach a 3 log reduction. Let's hope we all get there. Guest guest
Thank you Zavie. I always wondered what that meant and my dr.. could not explain it to me. That is why I was very upset when they startd testing me with the results of positive or negative. But that is what they now do at my hospital.
