Guest guest
Yes, I too have had dental problems while on Gleevec. I have been on it for almost 36 months and I have had to have two caps on my back teeth and I think I will need a third at my next check up. Before you said that, I did not think it was related to Gleevec, but now that you bring it up, it could be related. Matt Diagnosed January 2005 In a message dated 12/4/2007 5:52:00 P.M. My dentist said this was not caused from grinding or clenching my teeth so I just thought I would throw it out there and see if anyone else has heard of or experienced this side effect???? Guest guest
Hi, This issue has been brought up over the years. There hasn't been anything conclusively determined though that would show Gleevec as the cause of dental problems. The first thing I usually notice when this subject is raised, is that it's from people who are over 50. You don't mention your age but age does play a role in dental health. For myself, I've been on Gleevec just short of 6 years and I've had absolutely no dental issues at all. I haven't even had a filling in all those years. I also don't floss and only go for cleaning once a year so if anyone should be a candidate for dental problems, I'd say it would be me The other thing I should mention is that I'm only 37 so I'm sure that has as much to do with it as anything else. My mother on the other hand, is perfectly healthy and yet has had no end of grief with her teeth to the point where she actually had all the top ones removed. Her problems started when she was in her 50's but yet she's been healthy her whole life and never had dental issues before that. So while I suppose it's possible that Gleevec (and Sprycel) could cause dental problems, I personally tend to think that age is more of a factor. Take care, Tracey > > Can anyone tell me if you have had any side effects with either > Gleevec or Sprycel that causes you dental problems? Guest guest
Neutropenia may cause dental problems. Also changes of diet that were coincidental with cml dx, lack of calcium, aciditic fruits. Though like Tracey I have no special teeth problems since I am on gleevec (2 1/2 years). I am 41. Marcos. Guest guest
I think that sprycel depletes you of calcium. My teeth too hurt and have started having trouble with them and my bones. Guest guest
Hi, I'm glad you asked because I was wondering it also. I am over 50 -smile- but my very expensive dental work is breaking down- my crowns on my bridges are falling apart. My dentist suggested taht perhaps the stress from being newly diagnosed was causing me to grind my teeth at night putting extra stress on bridgework because it just suddenly started happening. No problems with my own teeth but the artifical caps keep breaking. Different dentists so I know it is not the integrity of the work unless they both used the same lab. On another note- I wrote to Dr. Druker about another question I had. Gleevec is wonderful but clearly it is a powerful form of chemo. I was soooo sick when I statrted taking gleevec and had so many side effects that I was wondering if it was possible to overtime poison our partners by exposing them to .....hmmm how do I say this... fluids during itimacy. He said no one ever asked him the question before but that while there was no data he thought that the amount excreted in fluids would be so small that there would not be any harm to anyone else. He is a very nice man and he responded very quickly to my email. Guest guest
I am so glad to hear from all of you with your own experiences! I am 46 and was on Gleevec for 1 1/2 years and went into complete remission :-) Both the BCR-ABL and Bone Marrow Biopsy were clear of CML...Just when I felt life was good and I was winning, the next BCR-ABL came back elevated on the high end and received a call from the doctor. He immediately put me on Sprycel and have been taking it for a little over 3 weeks now. I'm having lots of side effects (headaches, vision problems, weight gain, thinking problems) and so on. Thank God for these support groups! I thought I was going crazy having all these weird side effects, but now have found a great source of CMLers to chat with and find out these things are not just happening to me!!! Wow, what a relief! Thanks for all the great feedback on the dental question. Maybe it won't be so bad now that I'm on Sprycel! :-) Lblaine767 > > > Can anyone tell me if you have had any side effects > > with either > > Gleevec or Sprycel that causes you dental problems? > > I have had to > > have two fillings in two different teeth where it > > seems as though my > > teeth are crumbling...never had a problem with my > > teeth before so this > > is really strange. Guest guest
If my math is correct, it looks like it runs $182.57 per pill. The original price on my prescription was $5477. Lord, if I had to pay that each month I don't think I would live very long! Thank goodness we have good insurance!!!!!
