Guest guest
Sounds like you need to find yourself another Oncologist and fast... Blood test frequency varies depending upon how well you are doing. If ANC counts are below one, they should be repeated even on a daily basis, until you get it over 1 and in view of chronic low ANC problems (something I know something about because my wife suffers from such side effect) you should get them on a weekly basis. You can ask to just have the blood tests done and then a visit only if the numbers are too low. Please be aware that there are medications given to fake the bone marrow into believing an infection is present, tricking it into raising WBC and particularly ANC cells. The one my wife takes is called Neupogen. I would also suggest you get a booklet from Novartis to make your Oncologist read (and you can point to the paragraph...) about fatigue being a common side effect. Good luck and don't wait: dump the Onc! And find yourself another Oncologist who is not only up to date but sympathetic to your plight. Good luck, ________________________________ From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of Sent: Monday, December 03, 2007 4:24 PM Subject: [ ] Absolute Neutroophil Count Hi Everyone, I'm going to my Onc. tomorrow, and I need some info. Last month, I didn't know the proper terms, so when I asked him how my immune system was, he told me that took very specialized tests, and that we couldn't test for everything. My confidence in him has become quite shaken, especially since he insisted that Gleevec didn't cause fatigue, and referred me to my psychiatrist. Well, tomorrow is the deciding appointment. What I need to know is how often I should expect ad Absolute Neutrophil Count , or ANC be done. My visit to the onc came the same week one of our members died of pneumonia due to being Neutropenic. I couldn't think of the term at the time of my appt. Guest guest
Thanks , I am considering leaving the Onc. Guest guest
The ANC is part of the overall blood profile test, which should be done every time you go visit your Oncologist, who should set his appointments with you based on how well you are doing. The Oncologist should know, as part of his/her expertise, how often you need to be seen. My wife who is now prcu gets it done on a monthly basis and if at any visit the ANC goes below 1, then she takes a Neupogen shot and we set the visits 2 weeks apart until things get better again. Best wishes, mario ________________________________ From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of untilpayday@... Guest guest
Hi , Your doctor's response reflects the reality. The " immune system " is composed of many elements and dynamics and can not be tested with one single test. Do you keep copies of your blood test results? In my case, the #neutrophil and %neutrophil show systematicaly on every blood test. all my best, myriam On Mon, 03 Dec 2007 21:23:59 -0000, " " <untilpayday@...> said: > Hi Everyone, > > I'm going to my Onc. tomorrow, and I need some info. Guest guest
Hi , The ANC is part of the CBC (complete blood count)--the test which counts the number of the different types of cells in your blood. If you have a problem with your ANC the test should be done more often than if you don't. Also your level of remission and how long you have had cml is all part of what determines how often to get a CBC. I have had cml for over 7 years and have had a low ANC much of the time. The timing of my testing is determined by my doctor at MDACC where I was on an early trial of Gleevec. I initially had a cbc once every 6 weeks but now get one every 3 months because I have been stable for such a long time. If I get a CBC that shows an ANC of 1.2 or less I would get another CBC in 6 weeks rather than waiting 3 months. When I first started treatment however, I did get a CBC every week for the first couple months until things leveled out. At that time my ANC was below 1 so it was watched carefully. Hope this helps.
