Hi Donna,

If you weren't negative with the left-over trauma still not that far back, you

wouldn't be normal. However, I know many CML patients who have had various

traumas in addition to the diagnosis itself, turn to mental health professionals

for help and often take anti-depressants. I suggest you have your oncologist or

someone you trust, recommend a psychiatrist for an evaluation. Then there are

the usual ideas for exercise and doing anything that makes you happy.

Good luck! Something will help.

Dear All,

I was diagnosed in May with CML, " presented " with a white blood count

of half a million making it seem more like AML, was given 6 days of

chemo which brought the WBC down but plumetted everything else after

many blood and platelette transfusions and with the final diadnosis of

CML I guess you could say I am doing well, latest tests showed only 0.6

of bad stuff in my blood but 96% still in bone marrow. I am on 400mg

of Gleevec daily my Dr. tells me I am where he would have expected me

to be at a year (a good thing apparently). I am 48 years old and a

Mother of 4 I am tired alot now and find it hard to face the fact that

I cant do what I did before. I seem to tick along OK then something

sets me off and I am depressed and angry for days, is this " normal " how

can I stop being negative??

Hi Donna,

Welcome to the club that nobody really wants to be a member of.

Fatigue is a common side affect of Gleevec treatment. The good news is that

it usually goes away after a while. In my own case, it took about 9 months

before it went away. Don't give up.

Can you tell me what test was used to give you the 0.6 result?

If feeling negative is something new for you, then I would definitely see a

health professional about it.

Good luck,

Hi Donna,

You didn’t decide to stare at your Gleevec before you gave in to take the

pill. Are you thinking that giving in to take Paxel is showing some sign of

weakness? Depression is a medical condition and there are drugs that work

well for that problem.

Sorry if I’m abrupt. I normally respond this way in a private message but I

don’t see your email address.

Hi Donna,

I am new to this group, but I'm certainly not new to depression. We live in a

world where

we are taught to just tough it out, and only the weak need pills to handle

depression. It

takes courage to step over and treat the disease. We have taken such a huge

hit, it's hard

to get our mind around it all. THis is cancer. This is scary. On top of that,

your body is

weakened, and you have fatigue. I think you were very brave to share your

negative

feelings, and I hope you choose the best treatment to get through. I personally

could

never handle this ordeal without help, but that is my body chemistry. I just

hate to hear of

people suffering when they may be able to get help.

One thing though, with depression, I've learned, sometimes it takes a little

while to find

the right treatment. Please don't give up if all doesn't go well right away.

Remember, you

are not alone in this, many people experience depression, and it can be

debiltating. I wish

the best for you. Just know that most people wouldn't think you were weak for

getting

help. And those who would don't need to know all the details.

So, I hope that all made sense. Because of my depression and CML, I'm not

always clear. I

was just moved to respond.

Take care of yourself.

Hello Donna,

I was diagnosed with CML on Oct. 16, 2007, and I have to admit that I have

cried a lot since than.

I am faced now with two options;

a) continue to cry

b)Face this head on with God's help and try to live with the side effects.

I hope this helps

I think many of us go through that when we are first dxed. You will have to

eventually face it but everyone does that on their own time. Just as

medications effect people differently, so are how people cope with diseases

such as the one we all have.
