Guest guest
Hello I was released from work for the first 6 months after being DX. I was 22 years old with my white blood counts at 343. They didnt even want me leaving the house. I was able to work my full time job since then. I was DX in November of 2003. > > I have a general question, and would welcome your responses. Guest guest
Hi , My husband was diagnosed October 2006. He has never missed work for CML or from side effects of gleevec. He DOES have side effects but works as best through it as he can. He takes the gleevec in the evenings but had severe bone pain, muscle cramps and nausea for the first 3 mths. He missed his regular workouts for the first 3 mths but after that period, he works out, runs marathons and plays hockey. Now for some it does knock them a lot harder but I think if you try to work with your side effects you may be surprised at how much you can do. -shalyn > I have a general question, and would welcome your responses. Guest guest
Hi - after toughing things out at work, I had some serious deadlines I had to meet, my GP said I had to take 3 weeks off as my body is doing it " tough " coping with Glivec. The worse problems being my puffy sore eyes and headaches, heart pounding at times and my blood pressure is a bit unstable. My haem/t right from the start said to me I had to " balance " what was important to me LOL. I know others in OZ who were told by their haem/t to take off 4 weeks initially while your body adjusts to the changes. In hindsight (such a lovely word), it would have been better for me to delay starting Glivec a week and taking the time off. Regards, _____ From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of Sent: Tuesday, 23 October 2007 8:14 AM Subject: [ ] Work Leave of Absence I have a general question, and would welcome your responses. My Onc. has excused me from work for 4 weeks. I'm worried that I just won't be able to work after that---at least until I adjust to the Gleevec and it does it's job. Just out of curiosity, what has been some of your experiences with working? Were you able to work through it? I know everyone is different, but it helps me to balance my thinking when I hear other's experiences. Thanks so much, H.
Guest guest
Both CML and Gleevec effects everyone differently. When I first started I had terrible stomach cramps for up to 4 hours. So I took my medicine at night and spent some pretty rough nights but I didn' miss work. I was pretty tired becuase I had insomnia and the muscle cramps in my legs and feet would wake me several times a night. I wasn't always the best looking worker with my puffy eyes and a skin rash all over my body. Now after 6 months I am able to take my meds at lunch and I am rarely sick from them. I can go out to dinner with friends again. Also other than being pretty tired I didn't have any big symptoms of CML. Your doc may be looking at your labs and feeling that your immune system is going to be compromised by the medication when it drops your white blood count or you may be so anemic he may want to shore you up with rest etc. He may not want you being exposed to germs- what kind of work do you do? Maybe you can do a wait and see if you feel well enough to work. But you have to get a buy off from your doc. I had a trip planned for the week following dx. I went AMA but I told him I was going- we have hospitals and docters where I'm from.. I saw my family and many friends and was fine. But everyone is different. You could be flat on your back. For me the first 3 months were the worse. Sometimes I had nausea no matter how much water I drank or what I ate. Traveling bone pain was an interesting side effect. Oh and I got fluffy from the edema. Now that I think about it maybe I should have stayed home. I feel great 98% of the time now. So hang in there. Whatever you decide- please let us know how you are doing. Chi --- <untilpayday@...> wrote: > I have a general question, and would welcome your > responses. Guest guest
Hi , As many have said..Most people are able to go back to work once they are used to the Gleevec, I unfortunately am not one of them. That does not mean you will have any problems, just make sure when you go back your ready. I really wish I was able to work, it would mean allot more money then I bring in now..lol Terry Dxed April 04 40 years old On 10/22/07, china neal <chimera46@...> wrote: > > Both CML and Gleevec effects everyone differently. > When I first started I had terrible stomach cramps for > up to 4 hours. Guest guest
Hey , I am one of the unfortunate ones. I have bad side effects, diarea, nausia, fatigue, headaches, etc. and am working 2 days a week but can not do more. I am fighting right now with my disability to keep working 2 days. I don't know what I'd do if they said I had to go back to full time. I was dx in Oct 05. Thanks, <untilpayday@...> wrote: I have a general question, and would welcome your responses.
