A lack of iron in the blood kills human leukemia stem cells

Hi,

A recent study in France (Professor Hermine) discover that stem cells

are more sensitive then normal cells to a lack of iron. They will try

to produce antibodies that prevent the entrance of iron in the cells.

They hope that these antibodies will target the stem cells.

Some news of France (from the France Fondation):

''Or il se trouve que l'un des éléments essentiels à la croissance

des cellules est le fer : faute de fer, elles dépérissent, les CSL

(cellules souches leucémiques) semblant plus sensibles encore que les

cellules saines à cette privation.

L'équipe du professeur Hermine a réussi à mettre au point un

anticorps qui empêche l'entrée du fer dans les cellules. Avec l'aide

de la Fondation de France, elle espère bien parvenir à faire en sorte

que cet anticorps agisse directement sur les CSL, avec à moyen terme

l'espoir de mettre au point une thérapie efficace contre la leucémie,

thérapie qui serait de surcroît bien moins douloureuse que la

chimiothérapie.''
