Guest guest
I read that the first year of diagnosis is the optimal time to get a BMT. ****************************************** Hi Marrianne. This used to be true in the days of Interferon but it's no longer the case with Gleevec. In the old days of Interferon, people often progressed to more advanced phases of the disease after a year so that was why it was better to have the BMT in the first year. These days though, Gleevec can keep the disease well controlled for many years so timing isn't as important as the state of the disease. It's optimal to have a low disease load when going for a BMT meaning that it's better to be in chronic phase than blast crisis but the actual timing of the BMT isn't predictive of prognosis anymore.
