Guest guest
Dear Group, I asked my dentist if he would write an article on how to take care of our teeth and how the CML affected our teeth, and this is his reply. Every year over 1.2 million Americans are diagnosed with cancer. Of that over 400,000 patients may have painful and debilitating oral complications from their cancer treatment. Some of those complications may include dry mouth, sensitive lesions in the oral cavity, sensitive teeth, rapid decay, and difficulty swallowing. A few things that may help to combat these problems are: Regular Dental Checkups Brushing Morning and Night Flossing Use of Prescription Strength Toothpaste to decrease chances of decay and lessen sensitive teeth (i.e. Control Rx) Use of an Antimicrobial Mouth rinse (i.e. Listerine, Breath Rx, or Crest Pro Health) A significant problem that cancer patients encounter is Dry Mouth. Radiation treatment and some medications can cause this problem. Several things you can do to help with this problem by stimulating saliva flow are: Use of sugar free lemon drops Use of sugar free gum with Xylitol (i.e. Wrigley’s Eclipse, Extra, or Orbits) These gums also decrease bacteria counts in your mouth if used after each meal. Biotene is a company that specializes in dry mouth products. They have gum, toothpaste, mouthwash and several other products. You can find these products over the counter at most pharmacies. Or visit their web site at www.biotene.com. Because any mouth infection may have serious implications, contact your dentist immediately should any occur.________________________________________________________________ Since he didn't specifially CML and dental caries, etc., I guess I didn't get my point across. I was hoping he would address the problems that had been posted here recently to be more in point. Maybe when I see him I can explain more thoroughly the questions that we need answered. Well I tried. Cheers, Lottie
Guest guest
But that was nice, Lottie, of him to take the time. I never had dental problems with CML, only when i was on hydroxyurea, my gums bled so badly, I had to have my teeth cleaned every two months. When I finally got on Gleevec, the difference was so great, my hygienic (sp) is still talking about what a pleasure it is to work on my " only 10 left! " .Bobby Lottie Duthu <lotajam@...> wrote: Dear Group, I asked my dentist if he would write an article on how to take care of our teeth and how the CML affected our teeth, and this is his reply. Guest guest
Dear Lottie, I take care of four of my teeth by taking them out each night, soaking them, then laying them on the dresser.
