Guest guest
It means your near (or have reached a major molecular response (MMR): a 3 log reduction). That level depends on the lab's internal measurement and they may have provided this information in the report. This is very good indeed. This level indicate a CML reduction that is likely to be below the ability of the biospy to detect so your Doc is right that your next test should come back clean. The lab doing the PCR should be able to read CML a bit lower than this but people in the range of your results only very very rarely experience any relapse of CML in the future. > > Does anyone have any feedback on what a 0.091 means? > > Thanks > > Efrem > > >
Guest guest
Hi Efrem, This is an excellent result. Better than your last one (0.147). You are heading in the right direction. After Dr. Druker's teleconference this week, we know that there is no rush or incentive to try and get to MMR or PCRU in order to keep the CML in check. A PCR of 0.091 means that you have 100 times fewer leukemia cells in your system than when you were diagnosed. It is equivalent to a 2 log reduction in leukemia cells. Guest guest
The log reduction is a way to show how much a quantity has changed. It's like counting the numbers of zeros. From 1 to 100 you have 2 more zeros, so it's a 2 log increase, same thing from 0.1 to 10 or 0.01 to 1. Conversely from 100 to 1 it's a 2 log reduction. A 3 log reduction is from 1 to 0.001, (or 10 to 0.01 or 100 to 0.1 or ...). To compute the log reduction you divide the number at dx (if you have it, the lab baseline otherwise) by the last pcr number, and you take the decimal log (with any scientific calculator) or count the number of zeros to have a gross estimation. Guest guest
Hi Sharon, This is much easier to explain. If your PCR comes back as 0.0 it means that you are at PCRU. Undetectable. The best possible result you can hope for. But it comes with a problem. Not all PCR testing equipment have the same sensitivity. For the same sample, one lab can report that it is a 4 log reduction and anothers will report that it is 0.00 or undetectable. So, if it is a very sensitive lab, it will go to 0.0011 (4 log reduction), then 0.0001 (5 log reduction) until it reaches the sensitivity of the PCR equipment and then will report 0.0 or PCRU. Knowing your PCR value is not important. What is important is the trend. As long as your PCR value is either stable of keeps going down, you are in great shape. You only have to worry when it starts going up and continues to go up. Even then you don't have to worry because the test itself will vary. So you need 3 consecutive PCR tests in a row to establish any trend. I can easily vary by 1 log. Zavie In the telecast by Dr. Druker this week he stated that all you need is a 2 log reduction. There is no great urgency to get to a 3 log reduction or PCRU. _____ From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of Sharon & Denny Sent: March 28, 2008 7:19 PM Subject: RE: [ ] My latest PCR results Zavie So if my PRC is 0.00 the next time I will have a 3 log reduction 0.011 to 0.00 Please excuse my 65 year old brain. What is the importance of knowing your log reduction? Is it important???? And why do they call it log??? Sharon _____ From: groups (DOT) <mailto:%40> com [mailto:groups (DOT) <mailto:%40> com] On Behalf Of Marcos Perreau Guimaraes Sent: Friday, March 28, 2008 3:14 PM groups (DOT) <mailto:%40> com Subject: Re: [ ] My latest PCR results The log reduction is a way to show how much a quantity has changed.
