This is 's first year in College and he has had a tough time with

his studies. During his last visit with Dr. Talpaz he mentioned that

he has trouble focusing and his grades are suffering. Dr. Talpaz said

that there isn't any data about Gleevec causing issues with the mind

but I have read multiple posts of others that complain of the same

symptoms. We emailed Carolyn at Dr. Drukers office and she reports

that they have other patients that have complained of the same

symptoms.

Hi and ,

I remember reading over the years posts about ....it is so great to

know that one of our CML children has moved onto college! how great is that.

When I was on Gleevec (am now on Sprycel) I definitely had mental lapses or

brain fog. Sometimes I could not remember how to spell even a simple

word....I kept a dictionary handy or would change the sentence to use

another similar word. I am a Dr. Druker patient and have reported

this...along with others. I was also more forgetful and relied more on

lists. I have either just adjusted or maybe Sprycel does not affect this

aspect as much?

I worked with college students at a University for about 30 years. I think

it is very smart when first starting out to take a smaller course

load....12 credits is full time (you don't need 15). I would support all

Tracey's suggestions......work in a quiet place for shorter periods of

time, make simple notes that you can review easily. Many/most colleges have

an office that deals with special needs....some teach short courses on

effective study habits, etc. should see if there is such an office and

discuss his situation with them. If he needs longer for test taking, things

like that can be arranged. The transition from high school to college is a

big one.....if classes were easy for you in high school, they may be much

harder in college and the competition for grades is tougher. , don't be

hesitant to ask for some accommodation for this side effect of your

treatment......you are a survivor!! and I am sure that your college will

want to help you succeed.
