Sharon:

The sudden deaths on the notice, are from QT Prolongation. If you

are careful about the " no eating 2 hours before and 1 hour after " you

should have nothing to worry about. Just remember to drink a lot of

fluids, and make some of them electrolyte replacement drinks. If

you eat or drink near the time you take it, the medication " spikes "

in your system, meaning it becomes much more potent.

I started on 800 mg, had a little adjustment, went down to 400 mg

and am back on 800 mg and can honestly say it is so much

better than my bout with Gleevec.

Hang in their and enjoy the park.

Hang in there Sharon, each new medication that comes

out seems to be better than the previous one. Better in

that it is more powerful, has better results and less side

effects. Don't let the worry and angst get to you, but

do try to see how technology and pharmacology is

improving our situation each day.

Each visit I make to the cancer center I make, I make

them take an extra five or six vials of blood for research.

It is hard for me to give that much at one time (I am not

a good bleeder), but I do have hope that it will continue

to improve things.

My current CML specialist is excited about the advance-

ments that continue to be made and each time he tells

me that we hope to one day find a cure. In the mean

time we need to try to have a good quality of life.

With warmest regards,

Matt

Oh guys - I know what you mean! I was excited but full of trepidation when I

started on Glivec having found this site and learnt about it's side effects.

I had a huge week coming up when I started on the Thursday with a national

accreditation audit happening on the following Wednesday. Prior to being dx,

I had a plan worked out where I went on 2 weeks holidays, that left me with

6 weeks to finish off getting the procedure manuals and all the records and

a huge report finished analyzing the previous 3 years services we provided.

So what happened? I celebrated my 50th birthday, got dx with CML, had a hugh

birthday bash, went on holidays, then came back to specialist appointments,

BMB etc etc, while trying to deal with my dx and heaps of days off.

So, I still had to get everything done at work and the week before the audit

I started taking 400mg Glivec. Well - the first 3 days were a breeze, (HA

HA, I thought to myself - this isn't going to affect ME) then the 4th day I

woke up feeling like my head had been hit by a sledgehammer and I could

barely see out of my eyes. Well by Wednesday to say I was under the weather

is an understatement, but had pulled it all together (with the help of my

wonderful staff) and the audit - well we got 20/20. That was what I was

determined to get after the previous 3 years when we got 19.1/20.

So .....a long winded moral to the story is, you can lie down and let this

disease take you over and believe it or not it is a chronic disease that we

can certainly live with or you " deal " with it. I choose to not let it

control me - I am not that sort of person and probably not to my benefit at

times, I have refused to " lie down " and carried on with my life. What we

make out of life is what we put into it. I'm not saying I haven't had dark

moments when in the middle of the night I have been awake crying. My husband

is not a person to show much emotion - to give a lot of support as

such....he never asks how I feel or comments when I have a s*** ful day, but

if there is something I need done it happens....too bad about the flowers!

Sometimes I want to thump him for not showing enough consideration! He just

doesn't cope with sickness, hospitals etc and doesn't make me breaky in

bed.....but I don't do that for him either LOL! However, my kids are great

and having my work mates is great as they certainly lend an ear when I need

to sound off - just like this group here which is fantastic for the support

given, cos each and everyone of us has experienced what everyone else is

going through. As we Aussies say - " we are all true blue dinky di mates! "

from Downunder

Yes I know what you mean.

Today I started 400mg of Tasigna and I am sitting around the house waiting

for something to happen to me. It is awful!!!

So I am having a pity party today.. I have a lot of support from my family

especially my dear husband but sometimes you just don't want to complain

anymore. I just " grin and bare it " But today is rough!!! I am honestly

waiting to have a heart attack since I was told by my Dr. and Pharmasist and

some one on the other chat room that there has been 4 sudden deaths on this

medication... I need to " get over it " and start living!!!

So that is what I am going to do-I am going to take a shower and take my

little dog to the park and enjoy the beauty around me.

I think we should all print out your response and give it to our

families.

For me, I think the fact that I can do so much and have come so far, when I

do have a bad day or when I do have side affects that I need to address or

" bitch about " no one seems to believe it or want to hear it.

It's almost like I'm still here 8 years later (not dead) and they forget I

have Cancer.

I don't like the pitty but there are times when I really need that to be

recognized.

Thanks!
