Hi Eva,

In Canada we use a slightly different scale for white blood counts.

Your count of 231 would be the same as 231,000 if you were in the

US. The normal range for a white count here is between 4-12 whereas

in the States it would be 4,000-12,000 so you just have to add 3

zeros to compare with anyone in the US.

Your white count doesn't really mean too much in terms of your

prognosis. What you want to know is how many blasts you had (you can

see this on the blood report), if you had a high basophil count (also

on the blood report), if your spleen was enlarged (some doctors will

do an ultrasound to measure it) and if you had any other chromosomal

abnormalities other than the standard Philadelphia Chromosome. You

can only see this on the cytogenetic report from your BMB.

Most doctors will give you copies of whatever you want if you ask.

They don't like you snooping through your file when they're out of

the room but if you ask for a copy of any test, they usually don't

have a problem with it.

Take care,

Tracey
