Guest guest
Donna, you know, with the warming we are getting here, I wonder if it is related? Like a change of seasons. I noticed last weekend working outside I felt rather warm all over, but not what you are feeling, just not cool or cold. chris **************Create a Home Theater Like the Pros. Guest guest
I have had a stem cell harvest but I don't really know about having one obtained from a sibling. Maybe Tracey would know the answer to this one. I know that there is a lot of research being done on stem cell. etc..... I always feel extreme warmth on my skin as well as if anything touches my skin I get red and blotchy. It could be a band aid, lotion. warm/hot water in the shower, an article of clothing. My skin is super sensitive since diagnoses. That goes along with my sensitive scalp. If I wear a headband, barrette or a pony tail, I pay for it later. Oh the funny things we must deal with................ Guest guest
Hi Donna, I had something feeling like sunburn when I started gleevec. I was also very intolerant to warmth for a few days, just getting a blanket would make me feel queasy. It didn't last long. Marcos. Guest guest
Hi Donna, I think that would depend on your insurance company and if they wanted to pay for the harvest. I remember a similar case many years ago and the insurance company said no to the harvest because they rationed that should the patient ever need a transplant, the sibling isn't the only way to go so there was no need to harvest the sibling in a " just in case " scenario. My suggestion though is that you check with your insurance company. Tracey > > I have a question. > If you can have your own stem cells harvested could a possible donor > have this done???? Guest guest
Tracey makes a good point. To answer your question, YES it CAN be done. Whether the insurance company agrees though.... Sibling donors have cells typically collected just a few days before the transplant and the cells are infused " fresh " . This requires careful planning as the intended recipient of those cells has already undergone the myeloablative chemotherpy to prepare for the transplant. This cannot be done for an autologous situation since the cells remain fresh for only about 2 days in a refrigerator before they begin to all die. Not enought time for the chemotherapy remainiing in the body to completely de-toxify before the infusion and the cells would just die. So Autologous cells are " cyropreserved " in liquid nitrogen. Quite easy nowadays. This can be done for the allogeneic sibling donors as well. For some reason its usually not but it can be done. We did it in our lab once. The reason was there was evidently such bad blood between siblings that eventhough one agreed to donate, there was a fear the donor would renege at the last moment and leave the recipient with no active bone marrow. Happy ending though. Two ways to go. Simple marrow collection or peripheral blood apheresis collection (1-2 days). The latter needs the donor to take Neupogen for several days to get the cells " mobilized " into the blood were they can be collected. Both cost about the same. I recall this could run in the %5000 to %10,000 range. That's why insurance approval is important.
