Hi guys,

Do we have any information regarding the effect of Imatinib on men's

fertility and the fetus?

I am 33 year old male and my wife is 34 years old. We just got married

in Dec. 2007 and we dont have any kids as yet. I was diagnosed in

August 2007 with CML. Before I started with Glivec, I stored some sperm

at the reproductive health clinic here in Australia as per my

hematologists advice but my wife is not very keen taking this path

unless theres no other option.

Thank you and God speed to all.

Ray

Hi Ray,

There have been several men over the years who have fathered children

while on Gleevec and all had normal, healthy babies.

You can find a summary of the latest teleconference that I wrote up

where this topic was discussed in the Q & A part. The first link

summarizes the first portion of the lecture where Dr. Cortes talked

in general terms and the second link summarizes the various questions

and answers that were discussed:

Basically, there is no formal recommendation for men to avoid getting

their partners pregnant. The same isn't true for women on Gleevec

though since they obviously have to carry the child for 9 months

which is a long time to expose a baby to a drug.

All the best,

Tracey
