At the time, his speech wasn't good at all, but he 'followed' in his own words, ending with the last word of each sentence. His Spec. ed teacher knew he was following along appropriately. He also had to know things like: Who is on the cross? Jesus Where is heaven? He points up in the sky. Who is Jesus' mother and father? and ph During Reconciliation, the priest asked him if he was being a good boy (he nodded yes) and talked to him about being good......that is what God wants kids to do. We then said the Our Father together so he could hear Gareth's version. His First Communion was a private service because he wouldn't be able to tolerate the length and ceremony. He never had a problem taking the host or wine and does so each week. He also knows that if he doesn't behave in church, then he doesn't go to Communion. He was almost 9 when he made his. Best of luck to you and . Take care, everyone. Margaret
Guest guest
YES!! has some serious oral sensory issues. He would not accept it when we tried the first year. The second year, there was a nun working with him who figured out that he would take it as long as the priest tore off a tiny bit from a regular host. To this day (1 year later) I tell whoever is giving communion to please tear a tiny piece off because he cannot swallow a whole host. I will say that he sort of gags it down every single time. I am sure the people in the first pew get nervous. Then he says " I did it! " each and every time. The other thing we considered if the tearing does not work, is to offer wine. Any species is as good as another but it seems most churches do not offer wine at every mass. But if yours does, just touching it to his lips would be enough. Good luck - I was also stressed but it was pure joy (still is) when he received it. in Dallas First Communion > Need some help from those of you who have been through this...Mac is set to make his 1st Communion in just 3 weeks...my fear is that he won't accept/taste/eat the Eucharist. I can just picture him telling Father " no thank you, don't like it " or taking it and then opening his mouth to spit it out. How have others of you prepared for this, has anyone had a child who refused to accept the host??? We've talked about it, he sees the others doing it, we are supposed to " practice " next week, but I'm still a nervous wreck about what may actually happen...any advice is welcome! > > Jill > Mom to Mac (8 yrs., 2nd grade, preschool) and Kit (4.5 yrs., preschool, Ds) > >

Guest guest
refused it. The priest just blessed him.....sign of the cross in front of 's head. No big deal. I wasn't going to push it. There is no way he will ever take it. Guest guest
Jill, he never did anything further than communion. He never did a confession. All the concepts are too abstract for his understanding.......I figure if the gates of heaven don't open for him, without receiving all the sacraments, then we're all doomed. : ) Jackie
