Although there is not a lot of research done to know exactly how it all happens. Please don't let things like this bother you too much. The risk is always there, but there are always risks with every single child no matter what they do or do not have. Kristy I read this article....I knew kids with DS have a high instance of Leukemia but I didn't know the odds were that bad! Why is that? Does it have something to do with their messed up DNA? HI (playing catch up mail) When my Mom was alive she was a research nurse for our University hospital and she came across a study done on the connection between DS and Leukemia (on the gov medical study website ... I think) It was the children born without platelets or low platelets that were at high risk for leukemia, I think it said it was a precursor. She knew Sara was born with low platelets, why she was is ICU for 2 weeks after birth. I bet if I did a search I could find that info ..... In other words, does the risk drop when their platelets improve? Thanks so much, Laurie Mommy to Kayla 13 mo.

HI Laurie I just had one of those moments where you look at the phone and think " I'll just call Mom " its only a second or two but they still happen anyway I did a google search and found this article _http://www.ndss.org/content.cfm?fuseaction=InfoRes.HlthArticle & article=201_ (http://www.ndss.org/content.cfm?fuseaction=InfoRes.HlthArticle & article=201) Diseases of the Blood in Down Syndrome By: Dr. Len Leshin, MD, FAAP Source: www.ds-health.com; reposted by permission of Len Leshin, M.D. Im still looking for that study I talked about earlier, I cant remember the site name but I know it lists all or most of the studies done (gov site) I went to it awhile back and used my moms name in their search engine, she worked on many studies and was listed as one of the authors, cool to see your mom's name in print like that lol I also inherited all of her cancer medical books, so I can look there too. Please don't worry about any of this, believe me if it was an issue or a serious risk my Mom would have taken Sara herself to the Drs. about it heehee Its funny how you really miss a mothers nag lol Oh I was wondering, did your child have to have transfusions? My Mom died of streptococcal toxic shock syndrome, during her last 3 days of life the Drs. uncovered some unknown (to Mom and me) lab results. Mom being a nurse was aware and knowledgeable of the tests and the results and all the meds they gave her (like a certain antibiotic used for cancer patients). One of the blood test/results gave her a suspicion that she also had leukemia ........... on top of her organs shutting down. My sisters and I made a HUGE error of NOT opting on a bone marrow test. If Mom had shown signs of recovery the Drs. were going to order that test but since the test was a hard one they didn't do it, and we didn't order an autopsy. In after thoughts we all wish we had, you know to just know if this was in our family history now. A DR friend of mine told me to list it in our family history since odds are she did have leukemia. I think its time for a physical for Sara, its been awhile Kathy mom to Sara 14 ¸...¸ ___/ /\ \___ ¸...¸ ,·´º o`·, /__/ _/\_ \__\ ,·´º o`·, ```)¨(´´´ | | | | | | | | | ```)¨(´´´ ¸,.-·²°´ ¸,.-·~·~·-.,¸ `°²·-.¸ As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord. I am so sorry that your Mom is not here to pick up the phone and call! What an awesome woman she sounds like......and she left many great reminders of herself and her works here on earth! To answer your question, no, our Kayla didn't have a transfusion. Hugs, Laurie
