The great mystery of laundry detergent. It can have bluing agents,

softners, and who knows whats. We are using baking soda and vinegar.

So far it works great. The laundry smells clean but not perfumed. The

stains come out. I actually prefer it now over regular laundry soap.

My whites are whiter too. I use it for myself and the kids. Hubby

prefers arm and hammer liquid detergent. But his wash from work

requires heavier cleaning as he works with metals.

There are also seventh generation laundry soaps that are natural. Dr.

Bronners makes safe soap for laundry too. I just find a large box of

baking soda and a gallon of vinegar much cheaper. We use about a half

a cup of baking soda and maybe a quarter of vinegar.

Hulda recommends using BORAX for the laundry and the dishwasher

andtoilet, tub, etc. I have been using it for about a year or more

and find it works well except for the dishwasher. There I use the

stuff from whole foods without a scent. Anything with a scent works

the immune system and should be avoided. Holly

I use a completely non toxic laundry soap, that is biodegradable,

contains no phosphates, no chlorine and is pH balanced, but best of

all it works GREAT!!!

Yes, buy fragrance-free, particularly since many on the spectrum had olfactory

hypersensitivity.

Rhonda,

I can't remember the exact ingred. that isn't in the " ALL " which makes it

tolerable for MCS'ers. But, it is the rest of them. It has been months since I

had all the info from the other group members, but it is not the same. I

thought the same thing too. Bought the free & clear from another brand. But,

it wasn't the same. Maybe someone here can tell you what the exact ingred. was.

I do remember I had to read the info on the " ALL " site. So, no they are not the

same. (to sum that up quickly-hehehehe)

[] laundry detergent

I couldn't get All laundry detergent b/c the store I was at was out so

I bought the Whisk Free. Does anyone know if the Whisk Free is similar

to All Free and Clear. I have't read the ingredients on it yet but hope

it will be ok until I get somewhere else that has All.

I use Liquid Tide Fragrance Free. I can't use the Wisk kind. There is

another kind but I can't think of the name. I will post it if I can

remember. --- In , Gingersnap1964@...

I just use baking soda and everything comes out clean. Then I started

adding the ammonia and semed to make clothes 'squeaky clean'. Could

feel a difference but no smell to either wash method. Since others

here are using soap, I add a very small amount of whatever to give a

little boost to cleaning power but the baking soda softens the water

sooo much that I don't need much. I'm not even sure I need any at

all...can't tell the difference in plain baking soda wash and one

where I have added anything else...as long as I use at least warm

water. Not sure if it would be enough in cold.

For ALL:

I am sure I posted this before but here it is again. In addition to

fragrances being a problem, enzymes in detergents can also be allergenic.

Be sure to read the detergent label. ALL Free (for the moment) has no

enzymes but Seventh Generation has enzyme.

The protease (protein digesting enzyme)most detergents use, called

subtilisin, was asociated with very high rates of occupational asthma.

Many enzymes are powerful sensitizers, and more and more of these biotech

chemicals are ending up in detergents.

I believe that the most significant exposure is via chemical residues on

clothing lint, either from clothing that is worn or from dryer exhausts.

I noticed today in store that All Free and Clear comes in a dry form

now too. I don't know if formula would be the same as the original

liquid formula though.

Ok, now you all had me in my laundry room reading labels. Years ago,

while we were living in our moldy house, our saavy doctor (the only one

who suspected mold) suggested we use Dreft. We seem to do all right

with it, but I now read that it does have enzymes in it, and I have

breathing problems, hmmm. I also use Downy Free & Sensitive fabric

softener which only contains biodegradable fabric softeners. I have

heard that sheets leave a residue in the dryer.

Anne,

Thanks. Was at seventhgeneration.com website and their products NOT

contain petroleum but save. Here's what they said:

" Why are vegetable-based cleaners better? Most laundry detergents

are made from petroleum-based cleaners which use oil, a precious,

limited natural resources that will someday be depleted. Our

vegetable-based cleaners are made from a renewable resources and

therefore save petroleum. "

are NOT petroleum based. I'm sorry that someone has started this

ugly rumor and for why? Why not check out their website for

yourself.
